O cotidiano da rua : um estudo através da percepção do gazeteiro de Fortaleza

Previous issue date: 2006-12-27 / Notes of research about the perception of newspaper sellers regarding the
everyday happenings of the street, emphasizing work, sociability, risks and free
time activities. The objective of the dissertation is to analyze the representations
representations which the newspaper sellers make of their experiences in their
workplace as well as to check on the socioeconomic and cultural profile of these
individuals and identify indicators of psychological suffering regarding the details of
work in the street.
The methods used in the research were field observation, surveys and interviews
and group focus.
Field observation took place by means of accompaniments of the newspaper
sellers routine at this time, notes were taken about the perceptions and the stories
of the members in a field diary. The questionnaires and the interviews occurred
with the newspaper company in Fortaleza; the purpose was to learn about and
trace the profile of these individuals, aiming to collect lestimonies which would help
to understand the perception, representation of the street, by the newspaper seller
and his behavior in this space. I interviewed newspaper sellers who were working
regularly for at least twelve months, keeping in mind that, in this manner, we could
gather data from people who already had experience in this activity.
The surveys were used with135 newspaper sellers and the interviews took place
with 10 of them. The focal group had as its objective the stimulation of discussions
about the work of the newspaper seller and how he perceives his work
environment, the street. The use of the focal group is particulary important when
the objective is to explain how people consider an experience, an idea or an event,
be it that the discussion during meetings is effective in order to know about
information regarding what people think or how they feel, or even more, about the
way they act.
To conclude, it was observed that the street is represented mainly as a work space
by the newspaper seller, however, during the research, we noticed that there is
also a link with the street as an environment of socialization, social inclusion and
space time, theirs offering relationships with other people and the building of a
social identity.
But the research also showed that for the newspaper seller, the street is perceived
as a place of risk since, im this public environment, there are robbers, criminals

and drug users. Moreover, there is the prejudice of some people who believe that
because the newspaper seller is on the street, he could also be a thief.
By means of this research, I observed that the initial idea that the perception of the
street by the newspaper seller was principally linked to risk, was wrong. The truth
is that what appeared the most during all the research were the favorable points
that the street, or be it, the environment of the street is also one of siciability and
free time.

Key words: work, street, daily activities, perception, representation. / Registro de uma pesquisa acerca da percepção, representação e utilização da rua pelo gazeteiro de Fortaleza. A dissertação analisou as representações espaciais que os gazeteiros faziam de suas vivências no seu local de trabalho, percebendo nas suas informações também suas visões de cidade, moradia, trabalho e lazer. O estudo com os gazeteiros de Fortaleza apresentou o processo de uso da rua como o espaço de múltiplas facetas para os vendedores de jornal. Dessa forma, aparentemente restrito, o estudo da rua revelou os desafios e as condições de pessoas que têm a rua como o seu ambiente de trabalho. A pesquisa foi feita no período de fevereiro a agosto de 2006. A rua está, a cada dia, se tornando um espaço de trabalho, devido, principalmente, ao aumento do desemprego e do emprego informal. Porém, ter a rua como ambiente de trabalho permite que o gazeteiro tenha um universo de sensações diariamente. O gazeteiro faz da rua o seu espaço de sustento e até do de suas famílias, através de uma ocupação mais ou menos estável, pela qual estabelece suas relações de trabalho. Vindo de um lar caótico (em sua maioria), sofrendo todo tipo de transgressão de pais desajustados, sem possibilidade de acesso aos bens da sociedade e da cultura, o gazeteiro encontra na venda do jornal na rua a saída para poder existir. A pesquisa revelou a maneira pela qual o gazeteiro consegue transformar um espaço que poderia ser somente de trabalho em um espaço com variados significados.
