Previous issue date: 2005-11-11 / This study aims at describing the experience lived by the cardiopath patient, in an
attempt to understand how the individual who bears a Coronarian Heart Disease
experiences his/her situation of bearer of a heart condition in relation to himself/herself
and to the various contexts in which he/she is inserted. After being diagnosed as a
cardiopath patient by the health professional, how does the subject start to feel? In
which ways does the diagnosis influence his/her life? Does he/she feel disabled, limited,
or impotent to perform his/her functions with the disease? Does he/she feel
differentiated or stigmatized before the others? A qualitative study was carried out
employing two research methods: the phenomenological method, which attempts to
understand the meaning of the lived experience by those who have lived it, and the
ethnographic method, which aims at a cultural comprehension of the phenomenon,
seeking to learn about the stigma. The research has evinced that each subject
experiences his/her cardiopath condition in a very singular way. Some of the interviewed
subjects feel that they are limited to continue performing the activities that they
performed before finding out about their condition. In what regards the family context, all
the interviewed subjects state that their family relationships have suffered modifications
that involve positive and negative aspects. In what regards the stigma, some of the
interviewed subjects feel inferior to other people because they cannot practice their
professions any longer, and because they undergo significant changes in their life styles,
which involve restrictions on their diet, and on their professional activities, among others.
It has been ascertained that the stigma is present in the cardiopath s experience,
through his/her social relationships, in which friends and family members tend to
consider him/her as frail, diminished or less capable.
Keywords: Cardiopathy, Phenomenology, Stigma, Psychology. / Este trabalho tem como objetivo descrever a experiência vivida do cardiopata, visando compreender como o indivíduo portador de uma doença coronariana vivencia sua condição de "doente do coração" em relação a si mesmo e aos diversos contextos em que está inserido. Após ser diagnosticado como cardiopata pelo profissional da saúde, como o sujeito passa a se sentir? De que forma o diagnóstico influencia sua vida? Sente-se inválido, limitado ou impotente para exercer suas funções a partir da doença? Sente-se diferenciado ou estigmatizado diante das pessoas? Para este estudo, foi realizada uma pesquisa qualitativa utilizando dois métodos de pesquisa: o método fenomenológico, que busca compreender o significado da experiência vivida por quem vive ou viveu a experiência em estudo e o método etnográfico, que visa a uma compreensão cultural do fenômeno, buscando apreender sobre o estigma. A pesquisa mostrou que cada sujeito vivencia sua condição de cardiopata de forma muito singular. Alguns entrevistados se sentem limitados para dar continuidade às atividades que exerciam antes da descoberta da doença. No que se refere ao contexto familiar, todos os entrevistados afirmam que as relações familiares sofreram modificações, abrangendo aspectos positivos e negativos. Com relação ao estigma, alguns entrevistados se sentem inferior às outras pessoas por não poderem mais exercer a sua profissão e por sofrerem mudanças significativas no seu estilo de vida, como algumas restrições de alimentação, atividades laborais, entre outras. Foi constatado que o estigma está presente na vivência do cardiopata, através de suas relações sociais, em que amigos e familiares tendem a considerá-lo como fragilizado, diminuído ou menos capaz.
