Previous issue date: 2013-12-19 / The aim of this study was to observe and analyze the lifestyle of elementary school
teachers in the public schools of the city of Teresina, Piauí State, which, even
considering the demands of their work, the low pay and the working conditions, still
make the option to remain in teaching. It was done a qualitative research,
ethnographic, by observing the daily work of the selected teachers and applying
interviews as investigative means. Four teachers were observed and interviewed. For
the interviews were elected categories that favored the working and living conditions
of the teachers. It was found that the working conditions relating to the physical
structure of the school are reasonable, but that need improvement. It was observed
that teachers spend most of their time resolving conflicts between students in the
classroom, disciplining them and assuming roles of father, mother, delegate and
psychologist, and this compromises their work as educators. It was identified that the
break for rest in the range is not enough to restore their energies and enable them to
continue the work in the second time. It was found that, despite the excessive
workload, the long journey and the risks inherent in the profession, the pleasure at
work is related to the performance and success of students, and to the recognition
that all reported feeling by them. It was found that their job allows them to create
different ways of performing the same activity. It was identified that the teachers
experience different forms of psychological distress due mostly to the lack of
discipline of the students. On the other hand, it was noted that they develop defense
strategies, that allow them to alleviate this suffering. It is concluded that the living
conditions of the teachers are good, because they have extra income from
retirement, their husbands and ex-husbands, and that, despite working conditions
don't favour labour performance along the lines of what advocates the discourse of
ideal school, choose to continue in the profession, by commitment and as a form of
personal fulfillment. The results obtained in this study open up space for new
investigations of psychological slant and with much larger population, including
teachers from the state and private education, which can significantly evaluate the
living conditions of teachers.
Keywords: work conditions, living conditions, educational work. / O objetivo deste estudo consistiu em observar e analisar o estilo de vida dos
professores do ensino fundamental da rede pública de ensino da cidade de
Teresina, estado do Piauí, que, mesmo diante das exigências do trabalho que
realizam, da baixa remuneração e das condições laborais, ainda fazem a opção por
permanecer no magistério. Realizou-se uma pesquisa qualitativa, de caráter
etnográfico, tendo como modo de investigação a observação do cotidiano de
trabalho das professoras selecionadas e a aplicação de entrevistas. Quatro
professoras foram observadas e entrevistadas. Para as entrevistas, foram eleitas
categorias que contemplassem as condições de trabalho e de vida das professoras.
Constatou-se que as condições de trabalho referentes à estrutura física da escola
são razoáveis, mas que precisam ser melhoradas. Observou-se que as professoras
passam a maior parte do tempo resolvendo conflitos entre alunos em sala de aula,
disciplinando-os e assumindo funções de pai, mãe, delegado e psicólogo, o que
compromete o seu trabalho como educadoras. Identificou-se que a pausa para
repouso no recreio não é suficiente para repor suas energias e lhes permitir
continuar o trabalho no segundo horário. Verificou-se que, apesar da excessiva
carga de trabalho, da longa jornada e dos riscos inerentes à profissão, o prazer no
trabalho está relacionado ao rendimento e sucesso dos alunos, bem como ao
reconhecimento que todas relataram sentir por parte deles. Verificou-se que o seu
trabalho lhes possibilita criar formas diferentes de realizar a mesma atividade.
Identificou-se que as professoras vivenciam diferentes formas de sofrimento psíquico
decorrente, principalmente, da falta de disciplina dos alunos. Por outro lado,
constatou-se que desenvolvem estratégias de defesa, que lhes permitem amenizar
esse sofrimento. Conclui-se que as condições de vida das professoras são boas,
porque possuem renda extra, proveniente de aposentadoria, de seus maridos e exmaridos,
e que, a despeito de as condições de trabalho não favorecerem o
desempenho laboral nos moldes do que preconiza o discurso da escola ideal, optam
por continuar na profissão, por compromisso com o mister de educar e como forma
de realização pessoal. Os resultados obtidos neste estudo abrem espaço para novas
investigações de cunho psicológico e com população bem maior, abrangendo
professores da rede estadual e do ensino privado, que possam avaliar
expressivamente as condições de vida e trabalho dos professores.
