Previous issue date: 2015-03-30 / The first readings performed to start this investigation nurture the contact with many names
given to old age and to the process of human aging, such as envelhescência , senescence,
ageing, matureness, senility, among others, who were not placed on common sense, in an
attempt to name them. This study aims to investigate the development of those terms,
specifically from the recent Brazilian scientific production on human aging and old age,
including works such as the Revista Brasileira de Ciências do Envelhecimento Humano
(RBCEH), through the development of a qualitative research of bibliographical nature. It was
obtained that the concepts/adjectives most used by common sense to call the process of
ageing and old age in Brazil were old and or elderly. This is limiting conceptions which,
besides not give account of a complex and multifaceted process that is the human aging,
reduce the subject to a mere product and producer of them, and reveal the prejudices on
which Brazil, despite already passing through the second half of the "Era of Aging", still
shows immersed, regarding "being old", featuring varied stereotypes and stigmas. It is
concluded that the old age comes from the Other, it's the Other one that says being old. This
other, often, is society itself, shrouded in a culture of the cult of the young productive and
beautiful.
Keywords: Aging processes. Old age. Contemporaneity. / As primeiras leituras realizadas ao se iniciar esta investigação oportunizaram o contato com
muitos nomes atribuídos à velhice e ao processo de envelhecimento humano, como
envelhescência, senescência, ancianidade, maturescência, senilidade, entre outros, que não
estavam postos no senso comum, na tentativa de nomeá-los. Este estudo trata de investigar a
elaboração desses termos, especificamente a partir da recente produção cientifica brasileira
sobre envelhecimento humano e velhice, abrangendo obras como a Revista Brasileira de
Ciências do Envelhecimento Humano (RBCEH), mediante o desenvolvimento de uma
investigação qualitativa de cunho bibliográfico. Obteve-se que os conceitos/adjetivos mais
utilizados pelo senso comum para intitular o processo de envelhecimento e o ser velho no
Brasil foram velho e ou idoso. Trata-se de concepções limitadoras que, além de não darem
conta de um processo complexo e multifacetado que é o envelhecer humano, reduzem o
sujeito que envelhece a um mero produto e produtor seu, e revelam os preconceitos nos quais
o Brasil, apesar de já estar passando pela segunda metade da "Era do Envelhecimento", ainda
se mostra imerso, no tocante ao Ser velho , apresentando estereótipos e estigmas dos mais
variados. Conclui-se que o ser velho vem do Outro, é o Outro que lhe diz ser velho. Esse
outro, muitas vezes, é a própria sociedade, envolta numa cultura do culto ao jovem produtivo
e belo.
