Previous issue date: 2012-08-02 / CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The Navigation of St. Brendan is known as a branch of medieval Latin texts, which bring the
story of the sea voyage of St. Brendan and his monks in search of "terra repromissionis", an
lost paradise insular. In the narrative, Brendan and his companions traveling for seven years
in a wonderful space, where they meet many wonderful islands. Along the way, they celebrate
the major feasts of the liturgical calendar (Easter and Christmas), annually reliving the life
and death of Jesus. The journey is marked by numerous wonders, but also by many dangers
and difficulties, and should be placed within the context of medieval belief in the afterlife and
representation of earthly life as a pilgrimage. Thus, every man was basically a stranger
walking through this world to reach their eternal abode. Thus, the search for Paradise by St.
Brendan can be seen as a representation of the medieval Christian journey in search of
salvation. This journey culminates with their entry into Paradise, where all the righteous could
finally enjoy a full happiness and enjoy the rewards of a virtuous life. / A Navegação de São Brandão é como ficou conhecido um ramo de textos latinos medievais,
que trazem o relato da viagem marítima de São Brandão e seus monges em busca da “terra
repromissionis”, um paraíso insular perdido. Na narrativa, Brandão e seus companheiros
viajam durante sete anos num espaço maravilhoso, onde conhecem várias ilhas maravilhosas.
Durante o percurso, eles festejam as principais festas do calendário litúrgico (Páscoa e Natal),
revivendo anualmente a vida e morte de Jesus. A viagem é marcada por inúmeras maravilhas,
como também por vários perigos e percalços, devendo ser inserida no contexto medieval de
crença no Além e de representação da vida terrestre como uma peregrinação. Assim, todo
homem era fundamentalmente um peregrino caminhando em meio a este mundo até atingir
sua morada eterna. Dessa forma, a busca de São Brandão pelo Paraíso pode ser vista como
uma representação do percurso do cristão medieval em busca da salvação. Esse percurso
culmina com sua entrada no Paraíso, o lugar onde todos os justos poderiam enfim gozar de
uma felicidade plena e desfrutar das recompensas de uma vida virtuosa.
