Previous issue date: 2014 / Neste texto, buscamos entender os textos produzidos por religiosos franciscanos
e jesuítas sobre a conquista espiritual do Norte da Nova Espanha sob determinados eixos
interpretativos utilizados por esses religiosos. Não pretendemos identificar o que há de
“indígena” e o que há de “europeu” nessas obras, como parte da historiografia já tentou
fazer, mas sim analisar quais características, modelos e formas narrativas foram utilizados
pelos autores para construírem suas representações dos habitantes dessa parte do Novo
Mundo e, com isso, refletir sobre as relações estabelecidas entre a forma de narrar e aquilo
que é narrado. Os eixos que propusemos para essas crônicas são o da “ação demoníaca/
Providência divina” em contraposição ao da “agência humana/livre-arbítrio”. Ou seja,
ainda que possamos identificar características próprias a determinada época e/ou ordem
religiosa, não limitaremos nossa análise a tais conceitos. Dessa forma, pensamos outros
elementos que também integram os relatos missionários, como a maior ou menor ênfase
dada à capacidade humana, à vontade do indivíduo, ao livre-arbítrio nos registros sobre a
alteridade indígena e o cotidiano missionário. Por fim, também traçamos algumas considerações
acerca da historiografia sobre a conquista espiritual do Norte da Nova Espanha. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ / ABSTRACT: In this paper we seek to understand the texts produced by Franciscans and
Jesuits about the spiritual conquest of Northern New Spain under certain interpretative
axes used by those religious. We do not intend to identify what is “indigenous” and what
is “European” in those texts, as part of the historiography has already tried to do, but to
consider what features, models and narrative forms were used by the authors to construct
their representations of the inhabitants of that part of the New World and, thus, refl ect
on the relations between the form of narrating and what is narrated. Th e axes we have
proposed for the reading of these chronicles are “demonical action/Divine Providence”
as opposed to “human agency/free will”. Th at is, even if we can identify characteristics
of a particular time and/or religious order, we will not limit our analysis to this scope.
Th erefore, we consider other elements that are also part of the missionary accounts, such
as a greater or lesser emphasis on human capacity, individual will, free will in the records
on indigenous alterity and the mission’s everyday life. Finally, we also make some considerations
about the historiography of the spiritual conquest of Northern New Spain.
