O presente trabalho, feito com base em pesquisa etnográfica e análise de literatura, analisa o modo como a cultura escrita, a oralidade e narrativas relacionam-se no espiritismo kardecista no Brasil, tendo em vista a especificidade de uma religião que, ao se pretender cristã, racionalista e erudita, legitima a autoridade de seu referencial doutrinário, cosmológico e ritual por meio de práticas culturais letradas, que necessariamente envolvem a escrita e a leitura em sua realização. Ao estabelecer um sistema de referências erudito, cuja base divide-se entre, de um lado, orientações reveladas através do transe mediúnico e a discussão grupal dessas orientações, o espiritismo atualiza não apenas um sistema religioso de crenças, práticas e valores, mas toda uma cultura bibliográfica por meio de um conjunto de performances de estudo e leitura, citação e comentário, oratória, doutrinação e prece, cujo domínio constitui a condição de participação efetiva na religião, aliás práticas vinculadas a uma socialização prévia no mundo escolar e erudito da sociedade. Investigou-se também aspectos estruturais e temáticos da literatura espírita, composta principalmente de dissertações e de narrativas, por constatar a sua centralidade na conversão, socialização e reprodução de identidades no interior deste sistema religioso contemporâneo. Todas essas questões foram articuladas ao trabalho de campo por meio de uma etnografia da leitura e da fala, bem como por intermédio de uma descrição e análise de aspectos orais e escritos da desobsessão. O caso Chico Xavier também é aqui analisado não somente por sua importância no espiritismo brasileiro, mas também por condensar toda a gama de questões abarcada neste trabalho. / The present thesis is derived from ethnographic research and written sources and analyzes the way literacy, orality and narratives interrelate in the kardecist spiritualism in Brazil, considering the specificity of a religionhat claiming to be christian, rationalist and erudite legitimates the authority of his ritual, cosmological and doctrinary references through lettered cultural practices that necessarily involve writing and reading to get achievement. On establishing an erudite system of references whose basis splits between the directions revealed by mediumnic trance and the group discussion of these directions, spiritualism actualizes not only a religious system of beliefs, practices and values but a whole bibliographical culture through a set of study and reading performances, citation and commentary, oratory, doctrination and prayer, whose mastery is a condition for the effective participation in the religion, besides practices bound to a previous socialization in the scholar and erudite world of the society. Structural and thematic aspects of the spiritualist litterature, composed mainly of dissertations and narratives, were also investigated because of the finding of their centricity in the conversion, socialization and reproduction of identities at the interior of this contemporaneous religious system. All these questions were connected to thefieldwork through an ethnography of reading /speaking, as well as the description and analysis of orality and literacy aspects of desobsession. The Chico Xavier case is also analyzed not only because of its importance to Brazilian spiritualism, but also for epitomizing the whole gamut of questions embraced in this thesis.
