O objeto deste estudo foi o exame de práticas e artefatos mobilizados na escrita epistolar e sua relevância no Brasil no final do século XIX e primeira metade do século XX. Assim, usos da escrita, distribuição das capacidades de escrever e ler, materialidades do escrito, maneiras das escritas e leituras, foram pensados no âmbito da escrita epistolar. O alargamento dos processos de escolarização e a crescente alfabetização resultaram na ampliação do número de pessoas que tem acesso a esse universo, de pessoas capazes de escrever e de ler uma carta. Inscrito nos marcos de uma História Cultural da Educação, o estudo buscou acompanhar a afirmação das práticas epistolares numa sociedade da cultura escrita. Para isso, analisei três conjuntos de escritas epistolares: Família Maciel, Família D e Família G. Práticas de correspondência mobilizam habilidades gráficas e sociais dos correspondentes que se concretizam em papel e tinta. Essas materialidades das cartas - múltiplas e protocolares ao mesmo tempo, conforme a norma ou contra ela - indiciam competências gráficas, sociabilidades, práticas de escrita e leitura que perduram e reverberam em nosso tempo. / The object of this study was the examination of practices and artifacts deployed in epistolary writing and its relevance in Brazil in the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century. Thus, in the context of epistolary writing, uses of writing, the distribution of abilities to write and read, materialities of writing, ways of writing and reading, were taken into cconsideration. The extension of the schooling processes and the increasing literacy resulted in increasing the number of people who have access to the universe of people capable of writing and reading letters. In the scope of Cultural History of Education, this study sought to establish epistolary literacy as social practice. For this purpose, I analyzed three sets of private correspondence: Maciel family, family D and family G. For the purpose of the analysis I also used civility manuals, epistolary novels and published correspondence. Epistolary practices involve graphic and social skills of the correspondent, taking form in paper and ink. This materiality of each letter - singular and ‘regulated’ at the same time, to the norm or against it – work as evidence indicating graphic skills, and sociability, writing and reading that last and reverberate in our time
