As universidades tornam-se cada vez mais complexas, quer pela crescente ação de natureza política em suas instancias internas, quer pela necessidade de enfrentamento de ambiente externo cada vez mais competitivo, com mudanças velozes e radicais. A Universidade de Ijui (UNIJUI), instituição nova, que está crescendo rapidamente, pelas suas peculiaridades, apresenta aspectos bem diferenciados com relação ás demais universidades. Este estudo de caso descreve, com base nas teoria de Henry Mintzberg, como esta universidade está estruturada, como funciona e que influências sobre ela atuam. Como resultado, obteve-se que a UNIJUI se enquadra melhor na configuração "Burocracia Profissional" com forte e crescente conotação de Arena Política, levando a universidade em direção a ações internas e externas relacionadas a grupos de interesse específicos, intensificando-se a necessidade de negociação. Tal quadro requer mudanças no processo administrativo estratégico da universidade. / The universities have become more end more complex, either by their íncreasing internal action of political nature or by theír need of faeing the external anvironment with radical and quik changes. The University of Ijuí (UNIJUI), a fast-growing new instiution, because of its peeuliarities presents aspects which distinguish it from other universities. This case study describes, based on Henry Wintzberg theories, how UNIJUI is structured, how ít works and witch infuences affect it' As a result of this study, ít cari be said that UNI3Ut fits better the configuration of "Profissional Bureucracy", whít a strong and increasing connotation of "Political Arena", leading it towards internai and externai actions relatedto groups of specifics interests, strengthening the need of negociations. This pícture requires changes in the strategíc administrative process of this university.
