Este trabalho estuda os mecanismos pelos quais a identidade cultural caribenha é traduzida na literatura do Caribe de língua inglesa, num contexto sócio-político, histórico e cultural que, por sua natureza, se constitui múltiplo. Para tanto, foram escolhidos quatro romances da autoria de quatro escritores dessa literatura caribenha. São eles: The Mystic Masseur, do escritor V. S. Naipaul, Season of Adventure, do escritor George Lamming, Festival of San Joaquin, da escritora Zee Edgell, e Mr. Potter: A Novel, da escritora Jamaica Kincaid. Este estudo possui como método, basicamente, a análise textual de cunho comparatista, na qual, além de cruzarmos as leituras dos diferentes textos literários, as circunscrevemos no âmbito interdisciplinar dos Estudos Culturais. Assim, esta pesquisa fundamenta-se em noções básicas, tais como cultura, identidade e alteridade nas práticas literárias pós-coloniais, nas contribuições teóricas do sociólogo Stuart Hall sobre a identidade cultural, nas do etnólogo Fernando Ortíz sobre a transculturação antropológica, e nas do crítico literário Ángel Rama sobre a transculturação literária na América Latina. Aproveitando, também, as teorizações sobre o ato tradutório do linguista russo Roman Jakobson e as digressões que os linguistas George Steiner e Umberto Eco fazem acerca deste teórico, partimos do enfoque intralinguístico da tradução para desenvolver este trabalho. Levando em consideração, também, que os próprios artistas caribenhos são intelectuais e escritores que pensam e fazem sua literatura, apresentamos algumas reflexões que esses artistas do Caribe de língua inglesa apresentam sobre identidade e formação cultural da região e suas implicações no ato criativo. / This doctoral thesis studies the strategies by which the Caribbean cultural identity is translated into the literature of the English-speaking Caribbean. The social, political and historical framework in which that literature develops, embraces multiple cultures. We have chosen four novels, written by four English-speaking Caribbean authors. These novels are: The Mystic Masseur, by the Caribbean writer V. S. Naipaul, Season of Adventure, by the Caribbean author George Lamming, Festival of San Joaquin, by the Caribbean woman writer Zee Edgell and Mr. Potter: A Novel, by the Caribbean woman writer Jamaica Kincaid. Following the comparative literary approach, this study is based on the method of textual analysis in which, besides crossing different resulting readings from the literary texts, we circumscribe them in the interdisciplinary area of Cultural Studies. Bringing about basic notions such as the ones on culture, identity and otherness in the postcolonial literary practices, this research is founded upon the theoretical contributions to cultural identity by the sociologist Stuart Hall, to the anthropological transculturation process by the ethnologist Fernando Ortíz and to the literary transculturation process in Latin America by the literary critic Ángel Rama. Departing from the translation theories of the Russian linguist Roman Jakobson and the digressions of linguists George Steiner and Umberto Eco about the subject, this study focuses on the intra-linguistic aspect of translation to carry out its research. Based also on the assumption that Caribbean artists themselves – intellectuals and writers – are the ones who think and do their literature, we present some of their thoughts concerning identity, the cultural background of the English-speaking Caribbean region and their implications in creative writing.
