Previous issue date: 2015-02-27 / As taxas de suicídio na população médica e de estudantes de medicina se apresentam maiores do que as da população geral e de outros grupos acadêmicos. As principais causas apontadas nos estudos bibliográficos foram a maior incidência de transtornos psiquiátricos, como depressão e abuso de substâncias, e o sofrimento psíquico relacionado a vivências específicas da profissão, como a grande carga de trabalho, privação do sono, dificuldade com pacientes, ambientes insalubres, preocupações financeiras e sobrecarga de informações. Todos esses fatores podem influenciar negativamente a saúde mental do educando e não colaboram com a construção e manutenção de boas relações sociais e afetivas. Frente a este cenário, a pesquisa teve como objetivo analisar a correlação entre a ideação suicida e a empatia em estudantes de medicina da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. A pesquisa de campo aconteceu com a amostra de 197 estudantes do curso de medicina de diversos períodos da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. A coleta de dados foi feita ao longo de dois semestres. Foram aplicados três questionários autoaplicáveis: sociobiodemográfico, a Escala Multidimensional de Reatividade Interpessoal de Davis (EMRI) e a Escala de Ideação Suicida de Beck (BSI). Tratou-se de um estudo correlacional, inferencial e transversal. Os resultados indicaram que 9% da amostra apresentaram ideação suicida. Foi identificada correlação negativa entre a empatia e a ideação suicida, ou seja, quanto maior a empatia, menor a presença de ideação suicida. Esses resultados foram encontrados tanto na escala total de empatia, quanto nas esferas cognitivas e afetivas da empatia. Verificou-se que a esfera afetiva da empatia é mais sensível à ideação suicida do que a esfera cognitiva. Concluiu-se que se faz necessário maior número de estudos sobre a relação entre as habilidades sociais e a ideação suicida. Através desse conhecimento é possível construir políticas públicas e elaborar intervenções preventivas específicas para esta população. / Suicide rates in the medical population and among medical students are higher than in the general population and in other academic groups. The main causes identified in bibliographic studies were the highest incidence of psychiatric disorders such as depression and substance abuse, and mental suffering related to specific experiences of the profession, such as heavy workload, sleep deprivation, difficulty with patients, unhealthy environments, financial concerns and information overload. All These factors can affect the mental health of the student and do not collaborate with the construction and maintenance of good social and emotional relationships. Within this framework, the research aimed to analyze the correlation between suicidal ideation and empathy in medical students of the Federal University of Pernambuco. The fieldwork took place with a sample of 197 students in different classes of the Federal University of Pernambuco Medical School. Data collection was taken over two semesters. Three self-administered questionnaires were applied: the sociobiodemographic questionnaire, the Multidimensional Scale Interpersonal Reactivity Davis (EMRI) and the Scale for Suicidal Ideation Beck (BSI). It was a correlational, inferential and cross-sectional study. The results showed that 9% of the sample had suicidal ideation. Negative correlation between empathy and suicidal ideation was identified, i.e., the higher the empathy, the lower the suicide ideation. These results were found in both the full scale of empathy as in cognitive and affective spheres of empathy. It was even observed that the affective sphere of empathy is more sensitive to suicidal ideation than the cognitive sphere. The conclusion is that more studies on the relationship between social skills and suicidal ideation are necessary. Through this knowledge it is possible to build public policies and develop specific preventive interventions for this population.
