Previous issue date: 2015-08-27 / CNPQ / Nesta dissertação pretendemos analisar o uso da emblemática feito pelos jesuítas da
Assistência portuguesa da Companhia de Jesus. Para tanto, por tratar-se de um tipo de
linguagem, ou seja, de uma forma de discurso, tomamos como ponto de partida a reflexão
acerca do ensino da retórica clássica nas instituições educacionais administradas pela
Companhia, cujo programa de ensino era herdeiro dos modelos humanísticos. Fundada num
momento em que a Igreja Católica rediscutia o papel da imagem na difusão da fé, a Ordem
jesuítica demonstrou grande preocupação não só com o discurso proferido e escrito, mas
também com aquele expresso através de imagens. Refletimos sobre o papel da Companhia na
difusão, circulação e produção da emblemática a partir de uma abordagem em que os
emblemas são considerados mais do que simplesmente uma forma de comunicar a mensagem
cristã. Além de um instrumento didático, essa linguagem simbólica que coaduna texto e
imagem foi uma das formas possíveis de discurso moralizante e político. Analisamos, assim,
alguns testemunhos do uso da emblemática feito pelos jesuítas em impressos, cerimônias e
edificações em Portugal e nos domínios ultramarinos lusitanos. / The purpose of this study is to analyze the use of emblems by the jesuits of the Portuguese
Assistancy in the Society of Jesus. Therefore, since it is a type of language, in other words, a
form of speech, our starting point was the reflection of the teaching process of classical
rhetoric in the educational institutions organized by the Society, whose teaching program was
influenced by humanistic models. Founded in a period when the Catholic Church was once
again debating the role of images in the task of spreading the faith, the jesuits showed great
concern not only with the speech that was being presented through spoken and written
languages, but also with the one given through the use of images. This study focus on the role
of the Society in the spreading and production of emblems through an approach where they
are considered more than a simple way to communicate the Christian message. Much more
than a didactic instrument, this symbolic language, which merges both text and image, was
moralistic and political. Considering that, we analyze some examples of emblems used by the
jesuits in publications, ceremonies and edifications in Portugal and in overseas portuguese
areas of dominance.
