Previous issue date: 2011-08-31 / Os trabalhos de Educação Patrimonial realizados na Área Arqueológica do Seridó tiveram início na década de 1990, com o lançamento do livro “Indícios de uma Civilização Antiqüíssima”, de José de Azevedo Dantas, produzido a partir dos manuscritos feitos por ele na década de 1920. As ações do NEA-UFPE/Fundação Seridó visavam à proteção e preservação do patrimônio arqueológico da áreaa partir da busca do diálogo com a comunidade, possibilitando que ela reconhecesse a importância dos seus bens, contribuindo para o fortalecimento da identidade e memória coletiva. A partir da análise do histórico das ações de Educação Patrimonial realizadas em Carnaúba dos Dantas pela UFPE e dos trabalhos empreendidos pela população local, os objetivos dessa pesquisa foram: identificar nas ações realizadas, os princípios que permeiam o conceito de Arqueologia Pública; identificar os tipos de impacto que os programas de Educação Patrimonial geraram nos sítios arqueológicos e nas pessoas; identificar as maneiras mais eficazes de trabalhar o patrimônio na localidade; identificar a postura de intervenção voltada à preservação do patrimônio por parte dos órgãos responsáveis no Rio Grande do Norte. Foram realizadas entrevistas com participantes e não-participantes das oficinas e entrevistas em profundidade com as pessoas envolvidas na elaboração e/ou execução das atividades de Educação Patrimonial no município. O resultado das entrevistas, estudadas sob a perspectiva da história oral, e a análise do estado de conservação dos sítios arqueológicos da área, permitiu identificar as posturas utilizadas nas ações de divulgação e proteção do patrimônio arqueológico, fazendo entendê-las como características da Arqueologia Pública. / The works of Heritage Education realized on the archaeological area of Seridó had begun on the 1990’s, with the release of the book “Indícios de uma Civilização Antiqüíssima”, of José de Azevedo Dantas, the book was created from the manuscripts the author had done in the 1920’s. The actions of NEA-UFPE/Seridó Foundation were to protect and preserve the archaeological heritage by interacting with the community, so the community could recognize its value. This contributes to strengthen their identity and collective memory. Starting from the historical analysis of the actions of Heritage Education realized in Carnaúba dos Dantas by the UFPE and by the local population, the objectives of this research were: identify, on the works of Heritage Education, the principles through the concepts of public archaeology; Identify the impact that these actions have on the archaeological sites and on the people; identify the best ways to work with heritage on the community; identify what the responsible institutions of Rio Grande do Norte do to preserve the heritage. There were interviews with the participants and non-participants of the workshops, and there were deeper interviews with the people involved on planning/execution of the activities of Heritage Education in the city. The results of the interviews seen from the oral history perspective, and the analysis of the conservation status of the archaeological sites in that area, allowed us to identify how the divulgation and protection of the archaeological heritage are done, that make us understand them as a characteristic of public archaeology.
