Estudo da relação entre a glicemia e a coloração das íris humanas através do processamento digital de imagens

Método: Utilizaram-se um dispositivo óptico de aquisição de imagens das íris humanas e um programa de computador, especialmente elaborado para extrair parâmetros relativos à cor das imagens. Realizou-se um estudo em 24 voluntários. Foram efetuadas coletas, divididas em 10 sessões, com o registro de imagens de ambas as íris de todos os voluntários, imediatamente após a medida dos níveis de glicose através da glicemia capilar. Com todos os dados disponíveis, foi efetuada a análise estatística e a correlação foi avaliada.
Resultados: Verificou-se que a grande maioria dos setores das íris analisadas apresentou correlação entre -0,7 e 0,7. Observou-se, ainda, que ocorreram correlações positivas e negativas em ambas as íris. Nas íris direitas, as correlações positivas foram mais freqüentes, enquanto que, nas íris esquerdas, as correlações negativas foram mais comuns. Evidenciou-se, também, que não houve relação significativa entre a idade dos voluntários, o tempo de evolução do diabetes mellitus e a intensidade da correlação com que as cores das íris variaram com a glicemia.
Conclusão: A análise dos resultados obtidos, após os procedimentos realizados de acordo com o protocolo e a metodologia utilizados, permitiu-nos concluir que a variação dos níveis de glicemia provocou alterações nas cores das imagens fotográficas das íris humanas.

Objective: To determine the correlation between glycemia and the coloration of the iris, in diabetic and non-diabetic volunteers, through digital photographs of the irises processed by computer program.
Method: An optical device for human iris image acquisition and a computer program specially developed to extract parameters relative to the color of the images were used. Twenty-four volunteers were studied. All volunteers underwent ten sessions in which the levels of capillary glycemia were measured and the images of both irises were recorded. Then, using the data collected, the statistical analysis was carried out and the correlation evaluated.
Results: It was found that the great majority of the sectors of the irises analyzed showed a correlation between -0,7 and 0,7. It was also observed that positive and negative correlations occurred in both irises. In the right irises, positive correlations were more frequent, while in the left, negative correlations were more common. It was found that the ages of the volunteers bore no significant relationship to the results. It was also found that there was no significant relationship between the time of evolution of diabetes mellitus and the intensity of the correlation with which the colors of the irises varied with the level of glycemia.
Conclusion: The analysis of the results obtained, following procedures carried out in accordance with the protocol and methodology utilized, allowed us to conclude that the variation in the levels of glycemia provoked alterations in the colors of the photographic images of human irises.
