Previous issue date: 2014 / Abstract : Objective: To evaluate in vivo the bone repair in the use of poly lactic acid co-glycolic (PLGA) membranes associated or not with hydroxyapatite (HA) on the bone regeneration. Materials and methods: 53 rats (Rattus norvegicus albinus, Wistar) adult males ( 20-24 weeks ) weighing approximately 180g were used. The animals were shared in 3 groups : Sham control group, in which the bone defects were performed without membranes; PLGA and PLGA+HA groups in which the bone defects were covered with a PLGA and PLGA+HA membranes, respectively. The defect was created with a 5 mm diameter trephine burn on each parietal bone and treated randomly according to the groups proposed. The samples were collected in the experimental periods of 7, 15, 30 and 60 days post-surgery and processed for bone densitometry analysis in order to evaluate the bone repair. Results: Statistically significant difference was found in the PLGA+HA group when compared with SHAM group in the first two experimental periods. Conclusion: PLGA membranes associated with hydroxyapatite seem to accelerate bone repair in its early stages.
