Previous issue date: 2015 / The Years, uma das mais conhecidas obras de Virginia Woolf, foi lançada na Inglaterra em 1937. A única tradução feita para os brasileiros deu-se apenas em 1982, pelo tradutor e diplomata Raul de Sá Barbosa. Através da leitura da obra, pode-se perceber a importância da cidade de Londres no contexto geral do romance, que engloba uma época que vai de 1880 a meados de 1930 e fala sobre a típica família da era vitoriana. As personagens em The Years convivem, então, com fatores históricos reais presentes de forma regular. A partir deste ponto, busca-se analisar, através da aplicação da teoria funcionalista de Christiane Nord, que papéis tais referências desempenham na obra de Woolf, e perceber de que modo suas influências se mantêm - ou se dispersam - na versão brasileira. Para tanto, foram empregados fatores extratextuais (lugar e tempo) e intratextuais (assunto e pressuposições), importantes especialmente para a aplicação da função referencial como base para o processo de análise. Com base nisto, este trabalho está dividido em três seções distintas: a primeira, composta pelo embasamento teórico funcionalista de Christiane Nord; a segunda, que traz o contexto que permeia a obra analisada e também os contextos temporal e cultural ingleses e brasileiros à época do romance; e a terceira e última, em que se analisa a tradução, tendo como foco as referências espaciais e culturais adotadas por Woolf como pano de fundo para a obra The Years, em particular, em relação a três aspectos: a cidade, os meios de transporte, e as referências a personagens e fatos históricos (dando ênfase, neste último item, ao feminismo). Após a aplicação da teoria de Nord a estes aspectos específicos, tanto no original quanto na tradução, chegamos a dois pontos importantes: o fato de que é possível se obter uma tradução de The Years do ponto de vista funcionalista; e o fato de que o tradutor não encarou os itens analisados de forma a trabalhar em sua tradução para manter certos pontos do contexto criado por Woolf, repletos de significados que poderiam servir como chaves de sentido para o público leitor brasileiro.<br> / Abstract : The Years, one of the best-known novels by Virginia Woolf, was released in England in 1937. Its single Brazilian translation was only published in 1982, and was made by the translator and diplomat Raul de Sá Barbosa. While reading the book, it is easy to realize the importance of London in the general context of the novel, spanning a time that goes from 1880 to the mid-1930s, and talks about the typical family of the Victorian age. The characters in The Years, then, share the spotlight with regular insertions of historical features based in real life. Taking all this into consideration, we analyze, through the application of Christiane Nord's Functionalist theory, which role such spatial references play in Woolf's novel, while trying to see in whether such roles were kept - or lost - in the Brazilian version of the book. In order to do that, extratextual (sender?s intention, target-audience, time and place) and intratextual (subject and assumptions) functions were used?all of which are important especially for the application of the referential function as base for the analytic procedure. The dissertation comprises three distinct sections: the first is composed by Christiane Nord's translation theory; the second brings the context in which the book is placed, and also England's cultural and temporal contexts at the time of the novel; and the third and last section discusses the analysis of the translation, focusing on the spatial and cultural references adopted by Woolf in The Years, in relation to three aspect particularly: the city, its means of transportation, and the references to historical characters and facts (emphasizing, in this last item, feminism). After applying Nord's theory to these specific aspects, both in the original and in the translation, we have reached two important conclusions: first, that it is possible to obtain a translation of The Years from a functionalist perspective; and second, that the translator does not seem to work the translation of the analyzed items in order to maintain certain aspects of the context created by Woolf, filled with meanings which could serve as direction keys for the Brazilian audience.
