O realismo estrutural epistemológico afirma que o nosso conhecimento do mundo, representado por nossas melhores teorias científicas, é estrutural; a ciência não pode nos revelar nada que esteja além da estrutura - ou seja, nada das 'qualidades', da 'natureza intrínseca' ou da 'coisa em si' dos objetos pode ser conhecido. O realismo estrutural ontológico irá dizer que tudo o que podemos conhecer do mundo são estruturas porque só existem estruturas, e nada mais; essa versão sustenta uma ontologia de estruturas, e não de objetos. Dividimos a dissertação em duas partes. Na primeira, apresentamos um breve desenvolvimento histórico das duas versões do realismo estrutural e algumas críticas a elas; na segunda, apresentamos algumas definições fundamentais para uma discussão acerca da possibilidade de sustentarmos o realismo estrutural ontológico que será feita no final da dissertação.
There are at least two versions of the structural realism, the epistemic version and the ontic or metaphysical version. The epistemic structural realism affirms that our knowledge of the world, represented by our best scientific theories, is structural; the science can't reveal anything that is above the structure ¡ that means, nothing of the 'qualities', 'intrinsic nature' or 'thing-in-itself' of the objects can be known. The ontic structural realism says that everything we can know about the world is structures because there are only structures, and nothing else; this version maintains an ontology of structures, and not of objects. We divide the dissertation into two parts. The first one presents a brief historical development of the two versions of the structural realism and the main objections to them; the second, some basic definitions that will then be used in a discussion, which concludes the dissertation, on the possibility of maintaining the ontic structural realism.
