Atualmente, a sociedade vem atribuindo maior valor aos aspectos social e ambiental, com isso a implementação de um Sistema de Gestão Ambiental certificado segundo padrões internacionais pode se tornar um diferencial competitivo para empresas. Porém apesar das inegáveis contribuições sociais e ecológicas, tanto há opiniões controversas quanto aos reais benefícios financeiros dos investimentos no campo ambiental. Então, faz-se necessária a investigação da existência da relação entre implantação e certificação de um Sistema de Gestão Ambiental pelas organizações segundo o padrão NBR ISO 14001 e o desempenho ambiental e financeiro das organizações, analisando possíveis variações nos indicadores,antes, durante e após a certificação. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / Economy, Environment and Agriculture Studies Center – CEEMA. Linking the theme Environmental Management Certification, Environmental and Economic Management, this study aims to assess whether the implementation of an Environmental Management System Certification by voluntary instrument ISO 14001 is effective in contributing to improve environmental and financial performance. Nowadays the society is placing greater value on social and environmental aspects, a Management System Environmental Certification according to international standards may become a competitive instrument to companies. However, despite the undeniable social and environmental contributions, there are controversial opinions about the real financial benefits of the investments in the environmental field. So, it is necessary to investigate the existence of the relationship between implementation and certification of an Environmental Management System by organizations according to the standard ISO 14001 and environmental performance and financial organizations and analyzing possible variations in the indicators before, during and after certification.
