Concílio de Clermont-Ferrand. Nessa ocasião, o pontífice, dirigindo-se, sobretudo, aos bispos e religiosos do sul da França, conclama a Cristandade a peregrinar em armas até Jerusalém, com o objetivo principal de liberar os Lugares Santos e os cristãos orientais da dominação muçulmana. A presente dissertação terá como mister analisar alguns aspectos da mensagem papal, a saber: os caminhos de sua divulgação – que lhe permitiram alcançar um público extremamente amplo e plural – ; os relatos das relações entre cristãos e muçulmanos no Oriente medieval; e, finalmente, a importância das expectativas apocalípticas tanto para a pregação da Cruzada, quanto para a participação nela. Para tanto, serão estudadas algumas crônicas sobre as Cruzadas, notadamente a de Guilherme de Tiro, escrita no século XII, grande narrativa de síntese do movimento cruzadista. Além dela, serão também
importantes as crônicas de Guiberto de Nogent, Roberto, o Monge, e Fulquério de
Chartres. A análise seguirá os eixos religioso, fundamento argumentativo da
exortação e essencial elemento de convencimento; e político, na medida em que relações de poder se formam e se confirmam ao longo do movimento. Isso será
discutido sob a ótica da lógica da tradição (literacy), característicos ao período medieval, o que levará à elaboração de uma noção muito ampla e profunda, ao mesmo tempo política e religiosa, e profundamente envolvente, à qual chamaremos idéia de cruzada. _________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The First Crusade was preached by Pope Urban II in 1095 at the end of the
Council of Clermont-Ferrand. On that occasion, the pontiff, addressing mainly to the bishops and ecclesiastics of southern France, convokes Christianity to pilgrimage to Jerusalem in arms, with the main objective to release the Holy Places and Eastern Christians from Muslim domination. This work attempts to analyze some aspects of the papal message, namely: the paths of the message - which enabled it to achieve an extremely broad and plural public -; the reports of relations between Christians and Muslims in medieval East; and finally, the importance of apocalyptic expectations both for the preaching of the Crusade, and for the participation in it. For this, we will study some chronicles on the Crusades, notably the chronicle of William
of Tyre, written in the twelfth century – a major narrative synthesis of the Crusader movement. Beyond it, will also be important the chronicles of Guibert of Nogent, Robert the Monk, and Foucher of Chartres. The analysis will follow the religious axis, argumentative foundation of the exhortation and essential element of persuasion; and the political axis, insofar as power relationships are formed and confirmed during the movement. This will be discussed from the perspective of the tradition logic (literacy), characteristic to the medieval period, which will elaborate a very broad and
deep notion, which wil be both political and religious, and deeply involving, which will be called idea of crusade.
