Previous issue date: 2006 / Esta pesquisa foi realizada no município de Cacoal, Estado de Rondônia, trata-se de um estudo de caráter descritivo, transversal que visou avaliar o perfil do aleitamento materno entre crianças menores de dois anos de idade. Foram pesquisadas 233 crianças com idade inferior 24 meses de vida. As mães responderam a um formulário para averiguar sobre dados da mãe, do recém nascido, do pré-natal e do aleitamento, visando avaliar o conhecimento dessas mães em relação ao aleitamento materno. O formulário foi aplicado em 4 unidades básicas de saúde, que atendem crianças da zona urbana e rural do município. A idade média das mães foi de 24,4 anos (DP = 3,5 anos), sendo que 9% delas adolescentes. 55,8% das mães eram casadas e 72,5% residiam na zona urbana do município. 79% das mães possuíam renda familiar inferior a 2 salários mínimos, e 97,9% eram alfabetizadas. A prevalência de aleitamento materno entre as crianças nos primeiros dias de vida foi de 98,7%, porém no momento da entrevista somente 64,4% estavam sendo amamentadas, mas em aleitamento exclusivo estavam apenas 28,3% delas. Entre as crianças com 1 mês de idade somente 50,0% delas estão em amamentação exclusiva, enquanto que com 3 meses de idade essa taxa diminui para 27,3% e ao final do quinto mês é de 18,2%. A mediana para o aleitamento materno foi de 4 meses, enquanto que para o aleitamento materno exclusivo foi de apenas 30 dias (1 mês). Isso mostra que a prevalência de aleitamento materno no município de Cacoal-RO está abaixo das recomendações da OMS que mostra a necessidade de se melhorar a capacitação dos profissionais que realizam o exame de pré-natal, implementar ações voltadas para a promoção, proteção e apoio as mães, cabendo aos profissionais de saúde todos os esforços, na tentativa de melhorar os serviços de saúde do município. ________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This study was done in Cacoal city, Rondônia state it is a descriptive, transversal study which aims to assess the maternal lactation profile among children under two years old who live in the city. 233 under 24-month-old children were described in the study. The mothers answered a questionnaire to check the information about them, the newborn child, pre-natal and about the lactation, objecting to check their knowledge of the maternal lactation. The questionnaire was applied in 4 basic health units which attend native children from urban and rural areas. The mothers age average was 24,4 years old (DP= 3,5 years), and among them 9% were still adolescent. 55,8 % of the mothers were married and 72,5% of them lived in the urban area of the city. The familiar income of 79% of the mothers was lower than 2 minimum wage, and 97,9% were literate. The prevalence of the maternal lactation among the children in the first days of the life was 98,7%, so at the interview moment only 64,4% of the children were being breastfed, but only 28,3% of them were receiving exclusive lactation. Among one-month-old children only 50,0% of them were receiving exclusive lactation, when they complete three months old the rate falls to 27,3% and by the end of the fifth month this rate is of 18,2%. The average for the maternal lactation was of 4 months, while the exclusive lactation was only 30 days (1 month). This shows that the prevalence of the maternal lactation, in Cacoal City, is below the OMS recommendation and it shows the necessity of improving the professional capacitation of whom carries out the pre-natal exam and, to implement promotion actions, protection and support to the mothers, giving to health professionals the responsibility to do their best on health services of the city.
