Previous issue date: 2007 / Este trabalho buscou analisar a cidade de Brasília dentro do conceito de modernidade, aquele vigente a partir da revolução industrial e dos movimentos de vanguarda do início do século XX. Walter Benjamin e o seu texto sobre as Passagens de Paris servem de baliza na hora de tecer algumas considerações sobre a capital federal do Brasil. O Purismo, movimento de vanguarda construtiva de Le Corbusier, foi um que influenciou, mais do que se supõe, o movimento modernista e a história da arquitetura brasileira. Lúcio Costa e Mário de Andrade tiveram papel fundamental na formação da cultura brasileira como mediadores entre a tradição e a modernidade que se alojava. E, dentro desse modelo, o Estado exerceu um papel fundamental na instalação oficial da arquitetura moderna brasileira. Foi graças a essa aliança que grandes obras arquitetônicas puderam ser feitas, preparando o terreno para a construção daquela que foi o ápice dessa aventura: Brasília. Percorri o estudo dessa história e, através de deambulações na cidade e da captação de suas imagens fotográficas, alarguei o pathos de pertencimento a ela. Após atingir tal condição, o resultado natural foi a criação de estampas (design de superfície) relacionadas aos ícones da cidade, referentes à arquitetura, natureza e cartografia, que apresento ao longo dessa dissertação. _______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This study attempted to analyze the City of Brasília within the concept of modernity, which exists since the industrial revolution and the vanguard movements of the beginning of the 20th century. Walter Benjamin and his text on the Passages of Paris act as reference when it came to develop considerations on Brazil’s federal capital. Purism, Le Corbusier’s constructive vanguard movement, was one of the ideas that had more influence on the modernist movement and on the history of the Brazilian architecture than it is currently admitted. Lucio Costa and Mario de Andrade played a fundamental role in the formation of the Brazilian culture as mediators between tradition and the modernity that was taking place. Within this model, the State assumed a fundamental role in the official installation of the Brazilian modern architecture. It was thanks to this alliance that great architecture works could be raised, preparing the ground for the construction of what would become the climax of this venture: Brasília. I followed the paths along this history and, by strolling around the city and by capturing its photographic images, I enlarged my sense of belonging to it. After reaching this condition, it became a natural result to create patterns (surface design) related to the city’s icons referring to its architecture, nature and cartography, which I present throughout this dissertation.
