Previous issue date: 2006-05-19 / Este trabalho tem por finalidade desvelar a Guarda Negra da Redentora, nos quadros da cidade do Rio de Janeiro - entre 1888 e 1889 -, através de pesquisas baseadas em arquivos públicos, bibliotecas e jornais da época, tendo como referência teórico-metodológica a História Social. Como objeto principal da pesquisa, a organização será retratada numa abordagem que contemplará sua formação, seus membros, sua ritualística, seus principais líderes e incentivadores, suas ações e, principalmente, suas representações, no contexto do fim do século XIX. Os conceitos de identidades, imaginário, cidadania e representações foram aplicados com o intuito de facilitar a operacionalização da pesquisa. Sendo assim, fez-se necessária a análise sobre a Princesa Isabel, herdeira do trono brasileiro, principal foco de proteção dos ex-escravos. Estudaremos o cotidiano da Regente, seja no âmbito da vida privada; ou, na pública. Discorreremos sobre sua formação intelectual, as relações familiares, seu envolvimento na causa abolicionista, sua ação política, sempre consoantes com o mundo vivido à época. Haverá espaço privilegiado para a compreensão das festas dos negros, com todos os seus simbolismos, e da capoeira como instrumento de resistência e inserção social, corroborada pela ação das Irmandades, no cotidiano da parte excluída da sociedade. _________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This work has the objective of revealing and showing the Black Guard, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, between 1888 and 1889, through researches based on public files, libraries and newspapers of that time, having as methodological reference the Social History. As main object of the research, the organization will be portraited in an approach that will consider its formation, its members, its rituals, its main leaders and collaborators, its actions and its representations at the end of 19th century. The concepts of identities, imaginary, citizenship and representations were applied with the aim of making the operationalization of the research easier. Thus, it was necessary the analysis about Princess Isabel, the heir to Brazilian throne, main protection focus of the former slaves. We will study the Regent’s daily habits, both in private and in public life. We will talk about her intellectual background, familiar relations, her involvement with the abolicionist issue, her political actions, always consonant with the tipical 19th century world. There will be an important space for the comprehension of the black parties, with all their symbolism and of the capoeira as a resistance and social inclusion instrument, corroborated by the actions of the Black Fraternity, in the day-by-day of the excluded part of the society.
