Previous issue date: 1998 / Resumo: O distanciamento entre as declarações de fide1idade dos tradutores e suas descrições das infidelidades inevitáveis ocasionadas pelo ato de traduzir constitui o tema desta dissertação. Ao comentarem ou justificarem seu trabalho em prefácios, introduções e notas de rodapé de edições bilingües, os tradutores revelam a tensão entre o desejo de fidelidade ao original e a impossibilidade de realizar esse desejo. As declarações dos tradutores denotam o anseio por um significado transcendental que sobreviva às transformações do ato tradutório; por outro lado, as descrições e outras declarações contraditórias restituem ao texto seu caráter contingente, de acontecimento localizado no tempo e no espaço. A situação paradoxal criada pelas contradições nos prefácios abala os conceitos tradicionais dos estudos de tradução e constituem um ponto de aporia por onde é possível problematizar a questão da fidelidade. Para as teorias tradicionais, baseadas na possibilidade e, conseqüentemente, no dever de fidelidade a uma mensagem presente no texto, as qualidades e a importância do original são tomadas aprioristicamente, o qlJe coloca a tradução numa posição secundária e servil, rebaixando os tradutores à condição de parasitas do autor. Dessa forma, a análise do que dizem os próprios tradutores sobre seu trabalho é particularmente significante, pois as contradições revelam que os tradutores, mesmo de forma velada, resistem às teorias tradutórias que simplificam a questão da fidelidade. O jogo duplo de fidelidade/infidelidade, que transparece nas declarações conflitantes dos tradutores, é constitutivo do processo tradutório, pois o texto traduzido relaciona-se intimamente com o original por modificá-lo / Abstract: This thesis confronts express statements of translator fidelity with descriptions of the inevitable lack of fidelity resulting in actual translation. ln comments and j ustifications for their work found in prefaces, introductions, and footnotes of bilingual editions, translators betray the tension between attempts to be true to the original and the impossibility of so doing. Such statements of translators reveal a search for a transcendental meaning which wiIl survive the transformations wrought by the act of translation; on the other hand, the incompatibility of these statements with the descriptions questioning of traditional concepts of translation studies and hence the issue of fidelity. For traditional theories, based on the possibility of achieving fidelity to the message present in the original text, and consequent1y an obligation to do so, the value and importance ofthis original are taken for graÍ1ted, leaving the translation in a secondary and rather inferior position and reducing the translator to a mere parasite of the author. The analysis of what translators say about their own work is thus especialIy significant, since the contradictions reveal that translators resist translation theories which simplify the question of fidelity, even though this objection may be expressed covertly. The tension between fidelity/infidelity which appears in the conflicting statements of translators is constitutive ofthe process oftranslation, since in modifying the original, the translated text is intimately related to it / Mestrado / Tradução / Mestre em Linguística Aplicada
