Previous issue date: 2010 / Resumo: Esta tese visa a realizar uma análise da crítica teatral, publicada nos jornais fluminenses entre 1890 e 1900, perante as tensas discussões acerca da "decadência" do teatro nacional no meio intelectual brasileiro e as inovações deflagradas no âmbito da literatura dramática, em especial o gênero do drama. O tema da "decadência" do teatro nacional encontra-se, de certa maneira, relacionado ao advento da nova dramaturgia que despontou no fin de siècle, uma vez que ambos referem-se ao gênero "sério", representado pelo drama. Intelectuais e literatos como Artur Azevedo, Oscar Guanabrino, Valentim Magalhães, Luís de Castro, Urbano Duarte, entre outros, escreveram e opinaram sobre os dramas de autores considerados reformadores (Henrik Ibsen, Hermann Suderman, Ivan Turguêniev), por meio das montagens exibidas nos principais teatros fluminenses no período. Além disso, este estudo propõe traçar um perfil geral da crítica teatral jornalística, levando em conta as variações e transformações sofridas por esse tipo de texto (mais propriamente o gênero) na virada do século XIX para o XX, a partir de uma coletânea de resenhas de espetáculos do chamado gênero "sério" / Abstract: This thesis aims to conduct an analysis of theater criticism, published in Rio de Janeiro newspapers between 1890 and 1900, before the tense discussions about the "decadence" of the national theater in the brazilian intellectual and innovations raised in the dramatic literature, especially in the gender drama. The theme of "decadence" of the national theater is in some way related to the advent of the new drama that emerged in fin de siècle, as both relate to the genre "serious", represented by the drama. Intellectuals and writers such as Arthur Azevedo, Oscar Guanabrino, Valentim Magalhães, Luís de Castro, Urbano Duarte, among others, wrote and opined about the dramas of authors considered reformers (Henrik Ibsen, Hermann Sudermann, Ivan Turgenev), through the mounting shown in major theaters in the Rio de Janeiro. In addition, this study proposes to draw a general profile of journalistic theater criticism, taking into account the variations and transformations undergone by this type of text (more specifically the gender) at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, from a collection of performance reviews of the genre called "serious" / Doutorado / Literatura Brasileira / Doutor em Teoria e História Literária
