Previous issue date: 1988 / Resumo: Este trabalho descreve e analisa a situação sociolinguística do Povoado Canto, uma comunidade rural do interior do Piauí, cujos membros falam uma variedade de português diferente daquela falada na região. Os regionais consideram essa variedade de fala, ou como dizem, "a fala do Canto", a marca de identificação da pertinência de um indivíduo àquela comunidade. A investigação sociolinguistica dessa fala permitiu descrevê-la e analisá-la, além de identificar e caracterizar seis falares distintos utilizados na comunidade. Cada um desses falares se caracteriza por variações fonéticas em torno de uma fala genérica, ao tempo em que se constitui em marca de pertinência de um indivíduo a seu grupo de parentesco específico, do qual um dado falar é próprio. Uma perspectiva etnográfica permitiu não apenas a construção de modelos explicativos da situação linguística, mas também de importantes aspectos da organização social, da qual a fala faz parte. A conclusão mais importante deste trabalho é a de que o grupo do Canto vive uma situação interna de multidialetalismo onde cada falar assinala para os seus falantes a pertinência a um dado grupo de parentesco específico, prescrevendo para cada indivíduo uma série de direitos que tal pertinência implica. Dentre esses direitos destacam-se o de acesso, uso e posse da terra; direito diferenciado para os usuários dos distintos falares. Assim como cada falar marca a identidade social dos indivíduos, com base nas diferenciações e hierarquizações internas, a fala genérica marca a pertinência de cada indivíduo ao grupo do Canto como um todo, tendo por base as relações com o grupo dos regionais / Abstract: This work describes and analizes the sociolinguistic situation of the Village of Canto, a rural community in the State of Piauí, whose population speaks a portuguese speach variety uncommom in the region. The people of this region, 'the regionals', consider this variety of speech, or as they say, 'the speech of Canto', as the identifying work of the individuals who belong that community. A sociolinguistic investigation of this speech variety , permits us to describe and analize it, as well as to identify and characterize six distinct internal speech varieties in the community. Each of these speech variety is characterized by phonetic variation of the generic speech variety, and at the same time constitutes the mark by which an individual is identified as belonging to a specific kinship group, of which a internal speach variety is inherent. An ethnografic perspective permits not only the construction of explicit models of the linguistic organization of this group, but also reveals important aspects of its social organization of that speech is an relevant part. The most important conclusion at which one arrives is that the population of Canto has an internal situation of multidialetalism, in which each internal speech variety identifies the speaker as belonging to an specific kinship group, which prescribe for him certain righs implicit in such a relationship. One can point out, among these rights, the access to and use of land, a right which is different among the speakers of other internal speech variety. Thus, as each internal speech variety is a mark of internal social identity for the individuals of this community, based on differenciation and internal hierarquies, the generic speech variety is the mark of belonging for all the individuals who make up the population of Canto, having as its bases the relationship of this population to the region / Doutorado / Doutor em Linguística
