Previous issue date: 1997 / Resumo: O propósito deste trabalho é fazer um estudo dos estágios iniciais de aquisição do Português como segunda língua, por seis crianças de uma comunidade de nipo-brasileiros do Brasil. Até a idade escolar, fase em que começa a aquisição do Português (L2), estas crianças falam unicamente o Japonês (L 1) como língua materna. Foi tomado como objeto de estudo um fenômeno sintático que diferencia o Japonês do Português: o parâmetro da linearidade (isto é, a ordem das palavras). o estudo realizado ampara-se no modelo de princípios e parâmetros da teoria da gramática gerativa (Chomsky, 1965, 1981 e 1986), correlacionado aos estudos sobre "language transfer" (Odlin, 1989). É mostrado que, nesta fase da aquisição de L2, as crianças transferem o parâmetro "head last" de sua LI para a L2, uma língua de parâmetro "head first", fato que contraria alguns estudos que negam a existência de "transfer" (Dulay e Burt, 1974; Dulay et aI., 1982), principalmente no nível sintático (Felix, 1975; Paradis e Genesee, 1996) / Abstract: The purpose of this study is to analyse the first stages of the acquisition of Portuguese as a second language by six children living in a Brazilian-Japanese community in Brazil (Granja Yuba). Until school age, when they start the acquisition of Portuguese as L2, these children speak only Japanese as their mother tongue (L1). I have chosen to investigate a syntactic phenomenon, which distinguishes the Japanese and the Portuguese languages: the parameter of linearity (cf. Radford 1990), that is, word order. In this study, the principles and parameters model of generative grammar theory (Chomsky 1965, 1981, 1988) has been used together with studies on language transfer (Odlin 1989). The results show that in the initial stages of second language acquisition the children transfer their L1 's parameter of linearity (head-Iast) to L2 (a head-first language), thus contradicting other studies which deny the existence of language transfer at alI (Dulay and Burt 1974; Dulay et aI. 1982) or mainly at the syntactic leveI (Felix 1975; Paradis and Genesee 1996) / Mestrado / Mestre em Linguística
