Previous issue date: 1999 / Resumo: Esta dissertação tem por objetivo a pesquisa de uma das mais tradicionais brincadeiras verbais encontradas na maior parte das sociedades: as adivinhas ou adivinhações como são conhecidas na cultura portuguesa e brasileira, riddles na inglesa, devinettes na francesa, advinanzas na cultura castelhana, intovinelli na italiana. Partindo da leitura de alguns estudos produzidos sobre o tema e provenientes de diversas áreas do conhecimento - a cognitiva, a antropológica, a lingüística - pretendemos lançar um olhar sustentado pela disciplina Lingüística sobre esse jogo que é, sem sombra de dúvidas, um rico material no qual a linguagem nos "revela" o seu funcionamento. Ao longo dos capítulos I e lI, estaremos nos dedicando a traçar um pequeno histórico dos trabalhos já produzidos sobre o assunto em língua inglesa e analisaremos os
que se revelaram mais relevantes do ponto de vista de uma teoria lingüística. Ainda, estaremos fazendo um levantamento das tipologias construídas com base nos dados que os autores recolheram e analisaram; para em seguida, no capítulo IV, podermos arquitetar uma classificação das adivinhas, adequada para o nosso "corpus". No capítulo lU, abordaremos principalmente as características estruturais das adivinhas. Faremos isso com o intuito de reconhecer em sua forma um tipo peculiar de gênero do discurso, segundo a definição de gênero discursivo proposta por Bakhtin (1997) e Todorov (1980).
Para tal, contaremos também com a contribuição de Pepicello e Green (1984) relativamente a alguns critérios formais para a caracterização do gênero. Estes critérios estarão expostos no capítulo II e revisados no capítulo IlI, onde os limites de nosso objeto serão delineados, visto que entre nossos dados reconhecemos alguns que parecem estar no limite entre o gênero das adivinhas e um outro gênero discursivo, também voltado para o uso da linguagem como atividade lúdica - o gênero das piadas. Esses dados limítrofes nos fizeram perceber que a diferença entre os dois gêneros está para além de uma dessemelhança estrutural. Os traços enunciativos serão também aqueles que elucidarão a questão. Finalmente, teremos no capítulo IV, uma reclassificação das adivinhas com base em manobras discursivas necessárias para que se possa compreender o jogo. Com isso, pretendemos descobrir os diferentes recursos lingüísticos sobre os quais o jogo se assenta. Será neste capítulo também que duas classes de adivinhas, ignoradas por vários autores -as adivinhas de obviedade e as adivinhas de incongruência - serão incluídas na classificação. Como veremos, do mesmo modo que as demais
classes, estas últimas assentam-se sobre o funcionamento da linguagem e sobre certas expectativas dos interlocutores em relação a este funcionamento. Elas estarão devidamente descritas no capítulo IV / Abstract: This disquisition has as its main purpose the research of one of the most traditional verbal plays found in most of societies: the adivinhas or adivinhações, as they're known in the Brazilian and Portuguese cultures, riddles in English, devinettes in French, adivinanzas in Spanish and intovineli in Italian. Sundering from the readings of some studies generated conceming this theme and proceeding from several areas of knowledge - the cognitive, the anthropological and the linguisticalIy - we intend to put forward a glance supported by the Linguistics discipline about this game, which is undoubtedly, a rich material in which language reveals to us its functioning. Throughout chapters I and lI, we will be attaching ourselves in outlining a short historical of works already generated conceming the subject in English language and we will analyze the ones which have come out as the most eminent, from a linguisticalIy theory viewpoint. Yet, we will undertake a study of alI built typologies based on data - gathered and analyzed by the authors to, henceforth, in chapter IV, devise a c1assification
of alI riddles, suitable for our "corpus". In chapter IH, we will mostly tackle the structural characteristics of the riddles. We will do this, with the intent of recognizing in its form a peculiar type of gender of the discourse according to the definition of discursive gender proposed by Bakhtin (1997) and Todorov (1980). For such, we will be counting on as welI with the contribution of PepicelIo and Green (1984) related to some formal criteria to the characterization of gender. These criteria will be exposed in chapter H and revised in chapter IlI, where the limits of our object will be outlined, given that among our data we
recognize some which seem to be at the limit in between the gender of the riddles and another discursive gender, also tumed to the use of language as a ludic activity - the gender of jokes. These limiting data made us realize that the difference in between two genders is beyond a structural unlikeness. The stating traces will also be the ones which will illustrate this matter. FinalIy, we will have in chapter IV a reclassification of the riddles based in some necessary discursive tactics in order to make the understanding of the play possible. With that, we intend to find out different linguistically resources over the ones the play is settled. It will also be in this chapter that two classes of riddles ignored by several authors - the riddles af obviousness and the riddles of incongruity - will be included in the classification. As we will see, as well as in the other classes, these last ones settle themselves over certain expectations of interlocutors in relation to this functioning. They will be properly described in chapter
