Previous issue date: 1999 / Resumo: A crescente tendência a informação e a rapidez com que as mudanças ocorrem redimensionam fronteiras na atual sociedade contemporânea, pós-industrial e globalizada. Países em vias de desenvolvimento como o Brasil não conseguem acompanhar tais mudanças na velocidade imposta pelas regras internacionais, e no âmbito do sistema desportivo não ê diferente: o movimento do desporto de rendimento de portadores de deficiência está em xeque pela tendência de normatização que o equipara ao desporto de alto nível convencional. O desporto de cegos e deficientes visuais não foge à regra: estaria este subjugado a uma perversa lógica do sistema pós-capitalista global de competição ou participaria de novos paradigmas que estão sendo gestados há um longo tempo? Com o objetivo de melhor entender o movimento desportivo de cegos e deficientes visuais brasileiros, esta pesquisa foi centrada na construção de uma interpretação acerca desse universo, analisando, fundamentalmente, as ações e decisões tomadas, atualmente no Brasil, pela Associação Brasileira de Desportos para Cegos. Para tanto, foram feitas observações participantes em campeonatos específicos dessa entidade e coletaram-se depoimentos de atletas, técnicos e dirigentes envolvidos com o chamado desporto de rendimento de cegos. Subjacente à busca estavam as indagações sobre o que esse desporto representa, que resultados tem alcançado, de que maneira tem-se desenvolvido. Concluiu-se que, apesar de relativamente recente, tal fenômeno necessita de uma identidade e padrões de comparação próprios, e que sem um redimensionamento da lógica norte adora das práticas desportivas dessa população e uma reconsideração no modo de tratar tal desporto por parte de seus próprios praticantes, este estará fadado ao desaparecimento, antes mesmo de ter-se firmado no todo social, pela diferença / Abstract: A growing tendency to emphasize information in the world and the speed with :.1) which changes occur has redefined the frontiers of modem contemporary society in the post-industrialized globalized world. Developing countries such as Brazil have not been able to accompany these rapid changes in any area, including that of the sporting movement. The established rules and practices of the intemational sporting community pose a challenge for mere survival and increase the differences between countries. The top-Ievel sporting movement for the disabled in Brazil is thus kept in check by the increasing tendency to compare achievements in this modality with those in conventional sports. The situation of the sporting movement for the blind and visually impaired is no exception. The question is whether it should be subject to the perverse logic of the globalized post-capitalist system of competition or whether the Brazilian sporting movement for the blind is developing its own procedures and norms? The present research was thus undertaken in order to investigate the participation of the blind and visually impaired in sports in Brazil; it focused on the interpretation of the national sporting universe of these individuals and their perceived position in it. The championship competitions of the Brazilian Blind Sports Association were observed, and interviews of the athletes, coaches and organizers involved were made; these results, as well as the recent actions of and decisions taken by that entity were analized. Underlying the present investigation were questions about what this sporting movement represents, what results have been achieved, and how it has developed. It was concluded that, despite the fact that this movement is relatively recent, it is social phenomenon in search of an identity and standards of comparison of its own; without a redefrnition of the logic which underlies the unique sporting practices of this population and a reconsideration of how this movement is identified by those who participate in it, it will indeed be doomed to disappearence before it has even made a space for itself in the Brazilian social context / Mestrado / Educação Fisica Adaptada / Mestre em Educação Física
