Previous issue date: 2003 / Resumo: Este trabalho é uma tentativa de reconstruir a história da Viagem Pitoresca e Histórica ao Brasil, obra em três volumes, publicada pelo artista francês Jean-Baptiste Debret (1768-1848), entre 1834 e 1839. A leitura proposto não privilegia o aspecto documental de seu conteúdo, mas o sentido histórico e cultural da obra. Investiga, portanto, as condições em que foram elaborados os volumes, a biografia e as intenções de seu autor, bem como seu diálogo com a literatura de viagem e com diferentes iniciativas contemporâneas de elaborar o conhecimento histórico. Elabora-se, por fim, uma leitura de suas imagens o partir da intenção declarada por Debret de fazer uma obra historica sobre o Brasil / Abstract: This Thesis is an attempt to reconstruct the history of the Viagem Pitoresca e Histórica ao Brasil, work in three volumes, published by the French artist Jean-Baptist Debret, between 1834 and 1839. The approach of this research privileges the historical and cultural aspects over the documentary aspect of the work. It investigates, therefore, the conditions in which the volumes, the biography and the intentions of its author have been developed, as well as its dialogue with the travel writing and different contemporay initiatives to elaborate the historical knowledge. This Thesis, additionaly, analyses Debret's artistic work, assuming the artist's intention to make a historical work on Brazil / Doutorado / Historia Social / Doutor em História
