Previous issue date: 2000 / Resumo: A proposta do estudo foi avaliar a efetividade da terapia por aparelhos oclusais, em pacientes com alterações funcionais do sistema estomatognático, através da eletromiografia computadorizada. Foram examinados vinte e dois pacientes com sinais e sintomas de alterações funcionais do sistema estomatognático, de ambos os sexos, com idade entre 18 e 53 anos.As avaliações eletromiográficas foram realizadas antes do tratamento e após 90, 120, e 150 dias de utilização dos aparelhos de superfície oclusal plana, sendo que os mesmos receberam modificações (guia em canino e em grupo) nos dias 90 e 120 respectivamente. Os dados coletados foram agrupados em quadros e submetidos à análise estatística de regressão polinomial. Os resultados obtidos revelaram que: na posição de repouso, para o músculo temporal anterior, houve uma redução significativa na atividade eletromiográfica durante o período de tratamento; no fechamento da mandíbula sem resistência, para os músculos masseter e temporal anterior, houve reduções significativas na atividade eletromiográfica; e no fechamento da mandíbula com resistência, para o músculo masseter, houve uma redução significativa na atividade eletromiográfica. A guia em grupo produziu uma menor atividade eletromiográfica, em repouso para o músculo temporal anterior, no fechamento sem resistência para os músculos masseter e temporal anterior, e Fno fechamento com resistência para o músculo masseter / Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate, through computerized electromyography, the effectiveness of occlusal splints therapy, used by patients with functional alterations of the stomatognatic system. Twenty two patients, of both sex, aged between 18 and 53 years old, with signs and symptoms of the refered functional alterations, were examinated. The electromyographic evaluations were realized before the beginning of the treatment and 90, 120, 150 days after using the occlusal plane surface splints. It is important to emphasize that these splints received canine guidance and group function modification at the 90th and 120th day, respectively. The collected informations were submited to statistical analysis of polinomial regression, and revealed that the anterior temporal muscle, in rest position, had an expressive reduction in electromyographic activity during the treatment. The same fact occurried for the masseter and anterior temporal muscles, in movements of closing the mandible with no resistence. Even the masseter muscle, during the movement of closing with resistence, had a significant reduction in electromyographic activity. The group guidance produced a minor electromyographic activity for the anterior temporal muscle, in rest position. It also produced the same situation at closing movement, with no resistence, for the masseter and anterior temporal muscles, and at closing movement with resistence, for the masseter muscle / Mestrado / Protese Dental / Mestre em Clínica Odontológica
