Previous issue date: 1998 / Resumo: As questões examinadas nesta pesquisa pertencem ao campo das ciências humanas. Dizem respeito, acima de tudo, às relações entre saúde e sociedade e particularmente às relações odontologia e medicina. Tomou -se como referência imediata a existência separada da odontologia no interior das especialidades médicas e buscou-se examinar os problemas decorrentes desta separação. Elegeu -se como modo privilegiado de análise a abordagem arqueológica dos discursos.
Foram correntemente reconstruídos os conhecimentos sobre a cavidade bucal naquilo que ela contém de articulação com a vida genérica, simultaneamente como território amoroso, como linguagem e como mand ucação fisiológica. Foram desvelados os discursos da cirurgia dentária no século XVIII, as interfaces que manteve com a cirurgia e a medicina no período clássico e as transformações nos modos de descrever as estruturas anatõmicas da boca, a embriologia dental e a delimitação do seu domínio nosológico a partir do século XIX. Foi possível traçar os limites temporais e a biopolítica que caracterizam a emergência da Odontologia como prática social. O privilegiamento de uma bibliografia francesa foi decorrência natural da pesquisa, pois evidencia-se, a partir dela, os seus modos de atuação no momento mesmo do seu nascimento, modos todos, fundamentais e estruturais, que permanecem em vigência na atualidade e, sobretudo, na atualidade brasileira. Incluiu-se, como objeto derivado, o projeto pedagógico da odontologia emergente ou os modos como fez para auto-produzir-se e depois como pensou a produção do cirurgião-dentista. Finalmente imaginou-se, no ponto de partida, que a boca seria um objeto recusado pelas ciências humanas.
Alguns pressupostos foram estabelecidos ao início da pesquisa e serviram como balizadores da trama discursiva, sem que com isso se transformassem em limitantes. Ao final do p.er'curso encontraram-se bastante modificados. São longas as redes de determinanção em torno das quais o objeto boca se estrutura e discursam sobre ela e enunciam sobre ela, sem ordem de sucessão, os mitos e as histórias populares, a literatura, o cinema, a odontologia, a psicanálise, a paleantropologia, a medicina, a gramática, a religião, a puericultura, a pedagogia. No entanto, a hegemonia que a prática odontológica exerce sobre o objeto tem por efeito prático manter neste campo o recuo e a separação, resultando disto, como num reflexo, a idéia do abandono da odontologia pelas demais práticas soc:iais / Abstract: The issues examined in this study belong to the field of the Human Sciences. They are related, most1y, to the relationships between Health and Society, and particularly between Dentistry and Medicine. As an immediate reference, we adopted the separate existence of Dentistry inside the Medical specialties and examined the problems that emerged from this separation. The privileged way of analysis chosen was the archeological analysis of the discourses. We current1y reconstructed the knowledge about the oral cavity in its contents as articulated with the generallife, simultaheously in the fields of amorous relations, language and as physiological manducation. We unveiled: the discourses of Dental Surgery in the XVIII century; the interfaces that it maintained with Surgery and Medicine in the classical period; and the transformations in the ways of describing the anatomical structures of the mouth, oral embriology and the limits of its nosological domain since the XIX cer:tury. It was possible to delineate the temporal and biopolitical limits that characterize the emergence of Dentistry as a social practice. The preference for the French bibliography was a natural consequence of the research, since it makes evident its ways of action even at its emergence, alI of them ways, both fundamental and stru, ctural that remain valid current1y, and mainly for the Brazilian reality. As a derived subject, we included the pedagogical project of the emergent Dentistry, or the ways it adopted to produce itself, and then how it shaped the production of the dental-surgeon. Finally, as a starting point, we devised that the mouth might be a subjec~ rejected by the Social Sciences. Some premises were established at the beginning of the research and served as references for the discourse thread, without by that becoming limitations. By the end of the route, they had been much modified. The webs of determination amidst which the mouth is structured are complex, and myths and popular stories, literature, movies, Dentistry,
Psychoanalysis, Paleoanthropology, Medicine, Grammar, religions, wellbaby clinic care, Pedagogy (without any oráinal meaning) deal and mention it. However, the hegemony that dental practice exerts on the subject has as its practical effect the maintenance of the withdrawal and separation of this field, re, sulting as a reflex, in the image of Dentistry being abandoned or neglected by the other social practices / Doutorado / Doutor em Saude Coletiva
