Previous issue date: 2013-03-27 / The main motivations for the development of this dissertation are: the lack of
studies about the Seção de Obras Raras A. Overmeer of the Fundação Oswaldo
Cruz (FIOCRUZ), the importance of this section for the memory of the institution as
well as the contribution of personalities of the areas of medicine and librarianship
to the formation and consolidation of this section. The objective of this work is to
deepen the knowledge of the section characteristics, seeking a parallel between
aspects of its creation and the outstanding initiatives in the area of public health
which marked the end of the XIX and the beginning of the XX centuries in the
country. One takes into account here the concepts institutional memory and of
rare work , considering the complexity the latter and presenting the different
perspectives taken by several authors. The importance of the historical and
political dimensions of the rare work is also considered. A description is made of
the circumstances of the creation of the FIOCRUZ s first library and of the role
played by the doctor Oswaldo Cruz and the librarian Overmeer in the formation
and the development of the collection. Present characteristics of the section and
some of the highlights of its collection are also presented here. The main empirical
focus of this study is the set of theses of the Faculty of Medicine of the UFRJ
defended between the years of 1890 and 1925 - kept in the Section. These theses
are here analyzed with respect to their formal and content aspects. The analysis of
the formal aspects of the theses revealed that their pre-textual and pos-textual
elements underwent a great variation in the period considered. The analysis of the
theses content shows some subject variation in time. The sub-classes of the
predominant subject public health is also a subject of analysis. The last step of
the study consists of interviews with FIOCRUZ researches, seeking to find out their
visions about the rare work and about the importance of the collection for their
research. The interviews indicate that these researchers consider the Section the
main responsible for the maintenance of the institutions memory and a rich source
for their research. The combined evidence gathered in this study reveals the strong
relationship between FIOCRUZs institutional memory and the Section
characteristics. / A escassez de estudos sobre a Seção de Obras Raras A. Overmeer da
Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (FIOCRUZ), a importância desta seção para a memória
institucional, assim como o fato de que para ela contribuíram personagens
destacados da área da medicina e da biblioteconomia são as principais
motivações para a realização deste estudo. O objetivo geral do trabalho é
contribuir para aprofundar conhecimentos sobre as características do acervo,
buscando cotejar aspectos da sua criação e desenvolvimento com as destacadas
iniciativas em saúde pública que marcaram o final do século XIX e início do século
XX no país. O trabalho aborda o tema da memória institucional e detém-se no
conceito de obra rara, apresentando a abordagem de diversos autores que
destacam a sua complexidade, as diferentes perspectivas de análise, assim como
a importância de sua contextualização histórica e política. As circunstâncias da
criação da FIOCRUZ e de sua primeira biblioteca são aqui descritas,
especificamente o papel desempenhado pelo médico sanitarista Oswaldo Cruz e
do bibliotecário Overmeer na formação e desenvolvimento do acervo da biblioteca
da instituição. As características atuais da Seção e alguns destaques da coleção
de obras raras são também apresentados. Um levantamento do conjunto de teses
da Faculdade de Medicina da UFRJ guardadas nesta seção e defendidas entre os
anos de 1890 e 1925 foi também realizado no contexto deste estudo. Estas teses
são aqui analisadas pelo aspecto formal e de conteúdo. A análise referente ao
aspecto formal das teses, focalizando elementos pré-textuais e pós-textuais,
revelou que ao longo do tempo as mesmas apresentaram grande variação. A
partir da análise do conteúdo de um total de 1569 teses, constatou-se variação de
assuntos ao longo do tempo, sendo que a classe de assunto predominante -
saúde pública é também descrita nas suas sub-classes. Na última etapa do
estudo foram realizadas entrevistas com pesquisadores da FIOCRUZ que utilizam
o acervo, buscando-se conhecer a sua visão sobre o conceito de obras raras,
sobre a importância do acervo e sobre a contribuição deste para as suas
pesquisas. As entrevistas indicam que as pesquisadoras consideraram o acervo
um guardião da memória da instituição e fonte riquíssima para suas pesquisas. O
conjunto de evidências acumuladas pelo estudo revela a estreita ligação do acervo
com a memória institucional da Fiocruz
