Previous issue date: 2016-05-20 / This research aims to highlight production design and the work of a production designer
showing through the latest studies their role in theater making. Cinema, which has
emerged from theater, has developed and incorporated the function of production design
to such a degree that it has become a major narrative language in the visuality of a film,
whereas in theater it has not happened yet. This study begins conceptualizing
production design and its constituent elements such as scenography, costumes, makeup,
characterization of a character and lighting that are essential in the construction of a
narrative language. It also highlights the importance of the acting area as a mean in
which the dramatic action takes place. It is noted that since its inception the theater, in
one way or another, has made use of the production design, although it was not so
named, which was performed by skilled workers from the most different areas. After
analyzing the development and application of production design methodology in
filmmaking and in theater, it is presented the hypothesis that a production designer must
effectively become part of a creative team when staging a play. The theoretical
framework present in this research draws on the author's experience as a production
designer both in theater and filmmaking and on works of Felisa Blas Gómez, Michael
Rizzo and Vincent LoBrutto, which support this study. What makes it relevant to
Brazilian theater is the lack of formal studies in this area. Aiming to fill this gap and
stimulate the expansion of production design, both in the job market and in the
Academy, the author presents his methodology. / O objetivo desta pesquisa é ressaltar a importância da direção de arte e do diretor de arte
evidenciando com estudos mais recentes seu papel no fazer teatral. O cinema, que
surgiu a partir do teatro, desenvolveu e incorporou a direção de arte tornando-a uma
linguagem narrativa fundamental na criação da visualidade de um filme, prática ainda
não consolidada no teatro. Este estudo inicia-se com a conceituação da direção de arte e
seus elementos constitutivos: a cenografia, o figurino, a maquiagem, a caracterização e
a iluminação, essenciais para a construção da linguagem narrativa. Destaca-se também a
importância do espaço cênico como um elemento no qual se materializa a ação
dramática. Constata-se que desde o seu surgimento o teatro, de uma maneira ou de
outra, usufruiu da direção de arte, ainda que ela não fosse assim denominada,
desempenhada por profissionais das mais diferentes áreas. Após a análise do
desenvolvimento e da aplicação da metodologia da direção de arte no cinema e no
próprio teatro, apresenta-se a hipótese de que o diretor de arte passe efetivamente a
integrar a equipe criadora nas montagens teatrais. A construção teórica presente nesta
pesquisa apoia-se na experiência do autor como diretor de arte, no teatro e no cinema, e
nas obras de Felisa de Blas Gómez, Michael Rizzo e Vincent LoBrutto, que a
corroboram. O que a torna relevante para o Teatro Brasileiro é a carência de estudos
formais nesta área. Visando preencher esta lacuna e estimular a expansão da direção de
arte, tanto no mercado de trabalho quanto na Academia, o autor apresenta sua
metodologia.
