Previous issue date: 2013-03-01 / Objectives : 1) to evaluate the roughness of three surface sealants applied on a composite resin when subjected to simulated toothbrushing for different periods, 2) to evaluate, with the aid of scanning electron microscopy, the presence of surface sealants after simulated toothbrushing; 3) evaluating whether the type of dentifrice may shorten the life of the sealing surface. Materials and Methods : One hundred and eight bodies of the specimens were fabricated with resin Amelogen Plus, divided into 6 groups (n = 18) according to the type of surface sealant (Fortify (F), BisCover LV (B) and Permaseal (P)) and toothpaste (Colgate Total 12 Clean Mint (CT) and Colgate Total Professional Whitening 12 (PW)). The samples were subjected to brushing cycles, simulating periods of 6 months, 12 months, 18 months and 24 months. After each period, the samples had a surface roughness measured. An additional group of 48 samples was conducted for SEM analysis. The results were analyzed by ANOVA with three fixed factors (sealants, time and toothpaste) and Tukey's test (α = 5%). Results : BisCover had the lowest average surface roughness (0.06 μm) compared with sealants Fortify (0.09 μm) and Permaseal (0.08 μm), which were not statistically different. The Fortify on 12 months of brushing, had the highest average roughness (0.13 μm). The average roughness for the dentifrice CT was lower (0.07 μm), compared to the PW (0.08 μm) and was statistically different. The roughness increased up to 12 months of simulated brushing (0.04 μm, 0.08 μm and 0.11 μm), decreasing at the 18th month (0.08 μm) up to 24 months of brushing (0.07 μm). Conclusions : The sealant Fortify had the highest average roughness in 12 months of simulated toothbrushing, and the lowest roughness values were obtained by BisCover. Through SEM, it was observed that none of the seals used in the study was completely removed from the resin by 24 months of brushing. / Objetivos : 1) avaliar a rugosidade de tr?s selantes de superf?cie aplicados sobre uma resina composta quando submetidos ? escova??o simulada por diferentes per?odos; 2) avaliar, com aux?lio da microscopia eletr?nica de varredura, a presen?a dos selantes de superf?cie ap?s escova??o simulada; 3) avaliar se o tipo de dentifr?cio pode diminuir o tempo de vida ?til dos selantes de superf?cie. Materiais e M?todos : Cento e oito corpos-de-prova foram confeccionados com resina Amelogen Plus, divididos em 6 grupos (n=18) conforme o tipo de selante de superf?cie (Fortify (F), BisCover LV (B) e Permaseal (P)) e dentifr?cios (Colgate total 12 Clean Mint (CT) e Colgate total 12 Professional Whitening (PW)). As amostras foram submetidas a ciclos de escova??o, simulando per?odos de 6 meses, 12 meses, 18 meses e 24 meses. Ap?s cada per?odo, as amostras tiveram a rugosidade de superf?cie mensurada. Um grupo adicional de 48 amostras foi realizado para an?lise em M.E.V. Os resultados foram submetidos ao teste de ANOVA com tr?s fatores fixos (selantes, tempo e dentifr?cio) e de Tukey (α = 5%). Resultados : BisCover apresentou a menor m?dia de rugosidade de superf?cie (0,06 μm) quando comparado com os selantes Fortify (0,09 μm) e Permaseal (0,08 μm), os quais n?o foram estatisticamente diferentes entre si. O Fortify, em 12 meses de escova??o, apresentou a maior m?dia de rugosidade (0,13 μm). A m?dia de rugosidade para o dentifr?cio CT foi menor (0,07 μm) se comparado com o PW (0,08 μm), sendo estatisticamente distintos. A rugosidade de superf?cie aumentou at? os 12 meses de escova??o simulada (0,04 μm, 0,08 μm e 0,11 μm), diminuindo no 18? m?s (0,08 μm) at? os 24 meses de escova??o (0,07 μm). Conclus?es : o selante Fortify apresentou a maior m?dia de rugosidade em 12 meses de escova??o simulada, e os menores valores de rugosidade foram obtidos pelo BisCover. Atrav?s da M.E.V, observou-se que nenhum dos selantes utilizados no estudo foi removido completamente da resina at? os 24 meses de escova??o.
