Esta dissertação tem como objeto a reconstrução do conjunto arquitetônico jesuítico do Pátio do Colégio, cujas obras, requeridas desde a década de 1940, começaram a ser empreendidas em 1954 e perduraram até 1979. Durante esse transcurso a reconstrução foi alvo de polêmica e controvérsias de diferentes matizes, verificadas, sobretudo, nos debates ocorridos no âmbito de órgãos das esferas estadual e municipal de poder e na imprensa da época. Abordar essas controvérsias, identificar e qualificar os agentes sociais que dela fizeram parte - tanto os defensores da reconstrução quanto os seus críticos - e o teor de seus argumentos são os objetivos dessa dissertação, assim como perscrutar quais foram as funções sociais e os valores imputados à reconstrução pelos agentes que a engendraram. / The subject matter of this dissertation is the reconstruction of the Jesuit architectural ensemble of Pátio do Colégio, whose construction works, required since the 1940s, began in 1954 and lasted until 1979.During this time frame the reconstruction was the target of polemic and controversies of different degrees, mainly observed in the debates that took place at the level of state and municipal authorities and in the contemporary press. Addressing these controversies, identifying and qualifying the social agents participating in the process -both the advocates of the reconstruction and its critics - and the tenor of their arguments are the goals of this dissertation, which also involve scrutinizing the social functions and values imputed to the reconstruction by the agents that caused it to happen.
