Previous issue date: 2011 / Leprosy is a granulomatosic chronic disease which is highly infectious but has low pathogeticity and is caused by the Mycobacterium leprae. This study aims at describing the lymphocytes subsets T total (CD3+), T helper (CD4+), T cytotoxic (CD8+), T CD4+CD8+, B (CD19+), natural killers-NK (CD3- CD16+ CD56+) and T natural killers -NKT (CD3+ CD16+ CD56+) in patients with leprosy reactions, compare them with the ones who did not show leprosy reactions and differentiate the alterations of lymphocyte between the patients with type 1 and type 2 reactions. We used flow cytometry to quantify the lymphocytes and the Graph Pad Prism 4.0 program for the statistical analysis. We formed subgroups according to the presence (R+) or not (R-) of reaction and the period in which the patient was concerning to the multidrug therapy (MDT): before (An), during (Du) and after (Ap). We did not observe any significant differences in the lymphocytes between the groups with and without reaction, but we observed a decreased NK count in the R+/Ap subgroup when compared to the R-/Ap (p= 0,0228) and a decreased NKT count in the R-/Ap subgroup when compared to R-/An X (p< 0,05). Regarding to the reactional forms (type 1, type 2 or mixed), we observed an increase of the CD19+ cell population in the mixed forms. / A hanseníase é uma doença crônica granulomatosa com alta infectividade, porém baixa patogenicidade, causada pelo Mycobacterium leprae. Este estudo teve como objetivo descrever as subpopulações de linfócitos T totais (CD3+), T auxiliares (CD4+), T citotóxicos (CD8+), T CD4+CD8+, B (CD19+), Natural killers-NK (CD3- CD16+ CD56+) e T Natural killers -NKT (CD3+ CD16+ CD56+) em pacientes com formas reacionais de hanseníase, compará-los com os que não apresentaram formas reacionais de hanseníase e diferenciar as alterações linfocitárias entre os pacientes com o reação tipo 1 e tipo 2. Participaram do estudo 71 pacientes (47 homens), dos quais 37 pacientes apresentaram formas reacionais de hanseníase (R+), sendo 3 antes do tratamento multidrogaterapia- MDT (An), 9 durante a MDT (Du) e 25 após a MDT (Ap). Os 34 pacientes restantes não apresentaram formas reacionais (R-), desses, 5 ainda não haviam iniciado a MDT (An), 8 estavam em tratamento MDT (Du) e 21 já haviam terminado a MDT (Ap). Foi utilizada citometria de fluxo para a quantificação dos linfócitos e o programa Graph Pad Prisma 4.0 para as análises estatísticas. Não foram observadas diferenças significativas nos linfócitos na comparação entre os grupos de pacientes com e sem reação, porém foi encontrada redução das células NK no subgrupo R+/Ap, quando comparado ao R-/Ap (p= 0,0228) e nos linfócitos NKT também houve redução do subgrupo R-/Ap comparado ao R-/An (p< 0,05). Quanto à forma reacional (tipo 1, tipo 2 ou mista), foi observado aumento da população de células CD19+ nas formas mistas.
