nÃo hà / à notÃrio o uso crescente, tanto no portuguÃs brasileiro quanto no portuguÃs europeu, da expressÃo à que dita âexpletivaâ. Mas hà divergÃncias, entre os lingÃistas, em relaÃÃo à origem, natureza e funÃÃo dessa expressÃo. Este trabalho consiste num relato de uma investigaÃÃo empÃrica do carÃter multifuncional do à que, desenvolvida com o objetivo de descrever e explicar os diferentes usos, bem como suas origens, os processo(s)/mecanismos e propriedades formais e funcionais que caracterizam a emergÃncia dessa expressÃo como relativos a um processo de gramaticalizaÃÃo. No paradigma funcionalista em que se abriga o estudo da gramaticalizaÃÃo, esta pesquisa analisa, pancronicamente, dados amostrais do Corpus MÃnimo de Textos Escritos da LÃngua Portuguesa â COMTELPO, que reÃne textos portugueses do SÃculo XII ao SÃculo XVIII e textos das 1 e 2 metades do SÃculo XIX e XX do portuguÃs do Brasil e do portuguÃs europeu, classificados segundo o gÃnero e o perÃodo da histÃria do portuguÃs. Utiliza o programa SPSS para o cÃlculo de freqÃÃncia e correlaÃÃo dos indÃcios. Os resultados empÃricos parecem comprovar a hipÃtese de que, por meio de um processo de gramaticalizaÃÃo, o à que segue a trajetÃria espaÃo > texto, partindo de significados mais concretos para outros mais abstratos no texto, resultante da reanÃlise do uso original trecentista de à o que em à que. Quanto à emergÃncia da expressÃo, registrou-se, nos dados da amostra relativa ao SÃculo XVI, a primeira ocorrÃncia do à que em posiÃÃo inicial.
Na posiÃÃo medial, a expressÃo à que ocorre a partir do SÃculo XVII, em frases declarativas e exclamativas, e somente na 1 metade do SÃculo XIX, em frases interrogativas. Estabelecido esse percurso, a anÃlise dos dados referentes Ãs sincronias dos SÃculos XIX e XX revela que a expressÃo à que acumula as funÃÃes de marcador de Ãnfase e de marcador epistÃmico de asseveraÃÃo, e realiza-se por meio dos tipos denominados, neste trabalho, como: marcador enfÃtico-explicativo, marcador enfÃtico-contrastivo e marcador enfÃtico-interrogativo. / The increasing use of the expression à que, considered âexpletive,â both in Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese is conspicuous. Nevertheless, there are divergences among linguists in relation to its origin, nature, and function. This work is a report of an empirical investigation of the multifunctional feature of à que, aiming at describing and explaining its different uses, origins, processes and mechanisms, as well as the formal and functional properties that characterize the emergence of this expression as relative to a grammaticalization process. Within the functionalist paradigm, by which grammaticalization is sheltered, this research panchronically analyzes sample data of the Corpus MÃnimo de Textos Escritos da LÃngua Portuguesa â COMTELPO, that gathers Portuguese texts from the 12th to 18th centuries, and texts of the first and second halves of the 19th and 20th centuries in Brazilian and European Portuguese, which were classified according to genre and period of the Portuguese language. The SPSS program was used for frequency calculation and correlation of evidences. The empirical results seem to prove the hypothesis that through a process of grammaticalization, à que follows the path space > text, moving from more concrete meanings to more abstract ones within the text, resulting from the reanalysis of the original, 13th-century transition from à o que to à que. In relation to the emergence of the expression, the first occurrence of à que in initial position was registered in the data of the 16th-century sample. The expression à que starts to occur in middle position of declarative statements and exclamations in the 17th century, and only in the first half of the 19th century, it occurs in interrogative sentences. Once this pathway was established, the data analysis that refers to the synchronizations of the 19th and 20th centuries reveal that the expression à que accumulates the function of emphasis marker and epystemic asseveration marker, and occurs through the types termed in this work as: emphatic-explicative marker, emphatic-contrastive marker, and emphatic-interrogative marker.
