Previous issue date: 2007 / The thesis hereby being presented is based on a study about six illiterate individuals who reside in the city of São José do Norte, in the southernmost state of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul. It searches for an understanding of such individuals going beyond the social representations that depict them as inferiors. This study is characterized as qualitative with an ethnographic theme, and with auto-ethnography elements as well, utilizing Textual Analysis as a methodology of analysis of collected data. The data is mainly constituted by observations recorded in field notes, along with interviews with the investigated subjects. Inspired by authors whose studies are geared towards representation, identity, alterity and social exclusion, I make it as an argument that it is possible to build an understanding of alterity with the welcoming of the other, going past representations which define one as illiterate and all that such term entails. In this context, authors such as Emmanuel Levinas, Etelvina Nunes, Carlos Skliar among others contribute to the analysis of actions and talks of the subjects of investigation, in such a way that helps me with the understanding of their alterity. I emphasize that the welcoming of the illiterate other presupposes an opening in regards to listening to the words that are spoken by themself by means of a process of constant presentation of one’s being.I do not ignore the importance of the study about the social constitution of identities and their relation with the ways in which we are represented socially and how we represent ourselves, but I argue in the sense of showing that such study alone is not enough when it comes to the understanding of human subjects. It is necessary to go further, towards the welcoming of these subjects starting with themselves. The analysis of the data proves that the subjects being investigated view themselves in a way that is beyond of how they are represented socially, from the moment when they start talking about particulars of themselves, their desires, perspectives and histories of life. In this manner, they talk about themselves using original words that are not considered in discourses for these intend to represent them as “uncultured”, “inferiors”, and “uncapable of thinking critically about themselves and the social means where they live”. Nevertheless, I show that such discourses are also present in their talks and thus influence on the way they think about themselves. / A presente tese consiste no estudo junto a seis sujeitos analfabetos moradores do município de São José do Norte/RS e busca uma compreensão de tais sujeitos para além das representações sociais que os qualificam como inferiores. O estudo é caracterizado como qualitativo de cunho etnográfico com elementos, também, da auto-etnografia e utiliza-se da Análise Textual como metodologia de análise dos dados coletados. Tais dados constituem-se, principalmente, de observações registradas em diário de campo, dispondo-se, ainda, de entrevistas realizadas com os participantes da investigação. Inspirada em autores cujos estudos direcionam-se para a representação, identidade, alteridade e exclusão social, busco argumentar que o encontro com a alteridade é um caminho possível de ser construído a partir do acolhimento do outro, indo além de todas as representações que o definem como “analfabeto” e de tudo o que é, sobre o termo, suposto. Neste contexto, autores como Emmanuel Levinas, Etelvina Nunes, Carlos Skliar, entre outros, contribuem para analisar as ações e falas dos sujeitos da investigação, de modo a aproximar-me da compreensão de sua alteridade. Enfatizo que o acolhimento do outro analfabeto pressupõe uma abertura às palavras que são proferidas a partir dele próprio por meio de um processo de constante apresentação de seu ser.Não desprezo a importância do estudo sobre a constituição social de identidades e sua relação com as formas como somos representados socialmente e representamos a nós mesmos, mas argumento no sentido de mostrar que tal estudo não dá conta, sozinho, da compreensão dos sujeitos humanos. É preciso ir além, em um movimento de acolhida destes sujeitos a partir deles próprios. Dos dados analisados, emergiram as constatações de que os sujeitos investigados dizem-se para além dos modos como têm sido representados socialmente, no momento em que falam a respeito de aspectos de particulares de seu ser, desejos, perspectivas e histórias de vida. Deste modo, contam-se com palavras originais, muitas vezes desconsideradas em discursos que os pretendem representar como sujeitos “incultos”, “inferiores” e “incapazes de pensar criticamente a respeito de si e do meio social em que vivem”. Mesmo assim, mostro que tais discursos também estão presentes em suas falas e que influenciam na forma como pensam a si.
