Previous issue date: 2009 / The present research is a study made of the route named the “Caminho das Tropas”, under the point of view of the landscape archaeology. It aims to understand how did it materialize and form the landscape of the so-called “Troperismo” in the fields of Lages, state of Santa Catarina in the south region of Brazil. This route was opened in the XVIII century with the function of facilitating the transport of the cattle, horse or mule troops from the places where they were bred to the consuming or delivering centers. In this research, which geographic clipping includes the cities of Lages and Correia Pinto, between the Canoas and Pelotas rivers, the remaining archaeological vestiges of the related road have been identified and analyzed The development of the research was carried through the application of methodological strategies that have given support to the analysis and interpretation of the documents and of the material vestiges: documentary research (in writing, cartographic and iconographic) in many archives in Brazil and abroad, systematic archaeological prospection of sampling from stretches of the route, register of the archaeological evidences of the “Caminho das Tropas” and of its structures in a form especially elaborated for this purpose, application of the photo interpretation of satellite images, development of a database and a Geographic Information System (GIS). The results have allowed one to understand how the “Caminho das Tropas” and the corridors of rock walls have been constructed, pinpointing the environmental variables, the function and the use of the corridors, the origin of the construction technique, the availability of raw material, the probable use of payed workmen and the origin of the financing sources. / A presente pesquisa estuda o Caminho das Tropas sob o viés da arqueologia da paisagem, buscando compreender como o Caminho se materializou e formou a paisagem do Troperismo nos Campos de Lages, em Santa Catarina. Esta estrada foi aberta no século XVIII com a função de facilitar o transporte das tropas de gado vacum, cavalar ou muar dos locais de criação para os centros consumidores ou distribuidores. Nesta pesquisa, cujo recorte geográfico abrange os municípios de Lages e Correia Pinto, entre os rios Canoas e Pelotas, foram identificados e analisados os vestígios arqueológicos remanescentes do referido Caminho. O desenvolvimento da pesquisa foi realizado através da aplicação de estratégias metodológicas que auxiliaram na análise e interpretação do arcabouço documental e dos vestígios materiais: pesquisa documental (textual, cartográfica e iconográfica) em diversos acervos arquivísticos do Brasil e exterior, prospecção arqueológica sistemática de trechos amostrais do caminho, registro das evidências arqueológicas do Caminho e das suas estruturas viárias numa ficha de cadastro especialmente elaborada para esta finalidade, aplicação da fotointerpretação de imagens de satélite, desenvolvimento de uma base de dados e estruturação de um Sistema de Informação Geográfica (SIG). Os resultados obtidos permitiram compreender como o Caminho das Tropas e os corredores de muros de pedra foram construídos, apontando as variáveis ambientais, a necessidade, a função e o uso dos corredores, a origem da técnica de construção, a disponibilidade de matéria prima, a provável mão de obra empregada e a origem das fontes de financiamento.
