Previous issue date: 2007 / Thanks to being incipient, memory and emotion systematic investigation still lacks a solid foundation. In this context, one of the most urgent needs is the establishment of methodological parameters that allow for more comprehensive comparisons of results. In order to achieve that, it is necessary some methodological consistency. The normatization of stimuli, conducted in Empirical Section I contributes to this goal by generating standard indexes related to emotion. Another challenge of this investigation consists in obtaining explanatory theories for emotional phenomena. Empirical Section II is an attempt to enhance the explanatory power of a well known theory about human memory: the Fuzzy Trace Theory, which was originally conceived to explain non-emotional phenomena. For the sake of economy, it seems reasonable to test the capacity of an existing theory to explain new emotional phenomena, rather than to propose an entirely new theory with exactly the same goal. The last part, the theoretical Section, submits to scrutiny the most important methodological apparatus used both by Cognitive Psychology and Neuropsychology in order to obtain a cognitive architecture: functional dissociation. The objective is to reconsider the use of this methodology by all studies that postulate different memory systems, such as Fuzzy Trace Theory. Altogether, the three sections seek to enhance the theoretical and methodological conditions for the study of emotional phenomena - a goal being actively pursued by the Cognitive Processes Research Group at the Psychology Graduate Program from PUCRS. The empirical sections aim at augmenting the theoretical and methodological basis for the present investigation, and the theoretical section, by reassessing the appropriateness of an investigatory strategy, intends to renovate its utilization and liberate it from the existing criticisms. / A investigação sistemática relativa à memória e à emoção ainda não possui uma base sólida em função de ser incipiente. Nesse contexto, uma das tarefas mais urgentes é o estabelecimento de parâmetros metodológicos que permitam comparações mais amplas dos resultados. Para isso, é necessária alguma uniformidade metodológica. A normatização de estímulos, realizada na Seção Empírica I, contribui com esse objetivo ao gerar índices padronizados com relação à emoção. Outro desafio da investigação atual consiste na obtenção de teorias explicativas para os fenômenos de natureza emocional. A Seção Empírica II é uma tentativa de ampliar o poder explanatório de uma conhecida teoria sobre a memória humana, a Teoria do Traço Difuso, originalmente concebida para explicar fenômenos não emocionais. Por um princípio de economia, parece razoável testar a capacidade de uma teoria existente em explicar os novos fenômenos emocionais do que propor uma teoria inteiramente nova com esse mesmo objetivo. A última parte, a Seção Teórica, submete a escrutínio o mais importante aparato metodológico para a obtenção de uma arquitetura cognitiva, seja pela Psicologia Cognitiva, seja pela Neuropsicologia – a dissociação funcional. O objetivo aqui é reconsiderar a utilização dessa metodologia em todos os estudos que postulam diferentes sistemas de memória, como a Teoria do Traço Difuso. No conjunto, as três seções, buscam ampliar as condições metodológicas e teóricas para o estudo de fenômenos emocionais – um objetivo perseguido pelo Grupo de Pesquisa em Processos Cognitivos Básicos do Programa de Pós- Graduação em Psicologia da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul.As seções empíricas buscam ampliar a base metodológica e teórica da investigação atual e a seção teórica, ao reavaliar a propriedade de uma estratégia de investigação, pretende renovar sua utilização liberando-a do conjunto de críticas existentes.
