Previous issue date: 2007 / The objective of this work was to know aspects of the reproductive biology and feeding behavior of Liophis semiaureus in Rio Grande do Sul. Data were obtained through morphological character and gonad analysis of 158 specimens placed in scientific collections, in addition to digestive tract contents. The reproductive cycle is seasonal, where vitellogenic follicles were found from September to April and eggs inside the oviducts from October to May. The number of vitellogenic follicles varied from two to 18 while the number of eggs varied from three to 23, not having any relation of these variables with the CRC. CRC of mature females was noticeably bigger than the CRC of mature males, however the tail length of mature males and females wasn’t significantly different. Newborn specimens showed CRC sizes varying from 202 to 220 mm and tail length varied from 39 to 43 mm. Male specimens reach sexual maturity before females, around the 8th month lived, with body size corresponding to 67% of the smallest mature female with 581 mm. The diet of L. semiaureus is composed mainly of fish and amphibians. Amphibians (55. 2%) were more frequent than fishes (37. 9%), however, numerically fishes (n=51) in relation to amphibians (n=19) were found more often. The preys found have sizes varying from 3% to 32% in proportion to the body size of the serpent, not having any significant relation among them (p>0. 05). The most frequent ingestion direction of the prey items was head-first (68. 7%), in relation with different size of preys and any prey that could show injuries through ingestion process. Liophis semiaureus is a generalist serpent that forages after preys of different sizes, where the opportunistic character of the species prevails. / O objetivo deste trabalho foi conhecer aspectos da biologia reprodutiva e a dieta de Liophis semiaureus no Rio Grande do Sul. Os dados foram obtidos através das medidas e dissecção de 158 espécimes depositados em coleções científicas. O ciclo reprodutivo é sazonal, onde folículos vitelogênicos foram encontrados nos meses de setembro a abril e ovos nos ovidutos de outubro a maio. O número de folículos vitelogênicos variou de dois a 18 enquanto o número de ovos variou de três a 23, não existindo relação dessas variáveis com o CRC. O CRC de fêmeas maduras foi significativamente maior que o CRC de machos maduros, no entanto o comprimento da cauda de machos e fêmeas maduros não foram diferentes significativamente. Indivíduos recém-nascidos apresentaram tamanhos variando de 202 a 220 mm de CRC e o comprimento da cauda variou de 39 a 43 mm. Machos e atingem a maturidade sexual antes que as fêmeas por volta do 8º mês de vida e com tamanho corporal equivalente a 67% do tamanho da menor fêmea madura com 581 mm. A dieta de L. semiaureus é composta exclusivamente de peixes e anfíbios. Anfíbios foram mais freqüentes (55,2%) do que peixes (37,9%), no entanto foram encontrados numericamente mais peixes (n=51) do que anfíbios (n=17) na dieta. As presas encontradas possuem tamanhos que variam entre 3% a 32% em relação ao tamanho da serpente, não havendo relação significativa entre eles (p>0,05). O sentido de ingestão das presas mais predominante foi o ântero-posterior (68,7%), relacionado com os diversos tamanhos de presa e presas que pudessem apresentar injúrias em sua ingestão. Liophis semiaureus é uma serpente generalista que forrageia ativamente em busca de presas de diversos tamanhos onde prevalece o caráter oportunista da espécie.
