No primeiro capítulo descrevemos taxanomicamente a espécie. Este capítulo é apresentado em língua inglesa na formatação do periódico Copeia, no qual o manuscrito foi recentemente aceito. Adotamos para a nova espécie o nome provisório KAAPORA (kaa = mato + pora = morador), uma vez que a espécie ainda não está formalmente descrita. Pertencente ao grupo de Hypsiboas pulchellus, a espécie nova compõe um clado com H. semiguttatus, H. joaquini e uma outra nova espécie de Hypsiboas da Argentina e do sul do Brasil, das quais pode ser distinguida principalmente pelo seu canto. O segundo capítulo retrata sua história natural a partir de estudos de campo realizados mensalmente, entre dezembro de 2003 a maio de 2006. A reprodução é contínua (anual). Os machos de Hypsiboas KAAPORA vocalizam a noite e o ano todo, empoleirados na vegetação marginal herbácea-arbustiva, ao longo de riachos no interior da floresta. A razão sexual operacional no riacho é largamente voltada para os machos, o que deve refletir diretamente na aquisição de acasalamentos pelos mesmos. As fêmeas visitam o riacho somente quando estão aptas à reprodução, retornando à mata logo após a oviposição. A desova é depositada no riacho, onde os girinos crescem lentamente. A fase final da metamorfose é sincronizada e ocorre nos meses mais quentes do ano (dezembro e janeiro). O recrutamento de machos adultos no sítio reprodutivo se inicia em fevereiro e perdura o ano todo e as diferenças temporais no recrutamento parecem refletir estratégias reprodutivas distintas. (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: We studied a new species of amphibian anuran of the genus Hypsiboas, family Hylidae, which inhabits the Atlantic Forest from highlands at Serra de Paranapiacaba, São Paulo State, Brazil. In chapter one we describe taxonomically the new species. This chapter was written in English and accepted in the scientific journal Copeia. We used the provisory name KAAPORA (kaa = forest + pora = inhabitant) because the new species is not formally described. Pertaining to the Hypsiboas pulchellus species group, the new species is included in a clade with Hypsiboas semiguttatus, its sister species, Hypsiboas joaquini, and other new species of Hypsiboas from Argentina. Hypsiboas KAAPORA differs from these species mainly by its advertisement call. Chapter two is about the natural history of the new species. It was carried out in a monthly field study, from December 2003 to May 2006. Adult males were registered calling in all months along the year. They call at night from the marginal vegetation of streams inside the forest. Continuous reproduction occurs throughout the year. The operational sexual ratio was largely biased to males in the reproductive site, probably with direct effects on acquisition of females. Females moved to stream only in reproductive events. The egg-mass was deposited in the stream, where the tadpoles develop slowly. The end of the metamorphosis occurs synchronically in the wetter months (December and January). Recruitment of adult males at the reproductive site started in February and continued along the year. Temporal differences in recruitment seem related to distinct reproductive strategies. The population of adult males may include individuals from at least two different generations.
