A ausência de dados oficiais sobre a produção no município tem impedido o planejamento adequado de ações que visem o seu desenvolvimento, o que justifica o olhar científico sobre este tema. Propõe-se analisar o sistema de produção de plantas hortícolas, caracterizar o desenvolvimento de técnicas culturais e as condições socioeconômicas destes produtores rurais do interior paulista. Realizaram-se entrevistas com o planejamento amostral totalizando 89 agricultores familiares e não familiares. Utilizou-se o método estatístico multivariado. Os horticultores pesquisados caracterizam-se por níveis tecnológicos de produção como tradicionais (70%), em transição (11%) e modernos (19%). Houve a definição de classes econômicas (A, B, C, D, E) com base na análise da renda agrícola obtida com a horticultura, que referiu a seguinte porcentagem de distribuição por faixa de renda: Classe E (63%), D (24%), C (11%) e a A/B com (2%). Por meio da análise multivariada com o uso de dendrogramas identificaram-se quatro grupos principais: o agrupamento de horticultores tradicionais e diversificados (63%), dos horticultores em transição tecnológica e especializados (24%), dos produtores rurais modernos e orgânicos (5%) e, por último, o grupo de modernos e convencionais (2%). (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The municipality of Botucatu is recognized for being an important supplier of organic agricultural products and for having several production systems linked to horticulture. The lack of official data on horticultural production in the municipality has prevented adequate planning of actions aimed at its development, which justifies the scientific view on this theme. The main cropping systems of the municipality are linked to the horticulture, fruit growing, cultivation of medicinal plants, cultivation of edible mushrooms and unconventional food plants. It is proposed to analyze the system of vegetable production, to characterize the development of cultural techniques and the socioeconomic conditions of these rural producers of the interior of São Paulo. Sampling planning interviews were carried out totalizing 89 family and nonfamily farmers since, recognized farmers of the horticulture. The multivariate statistical method was used to analyze the behavior of several qualitative and quantitative variables. The researched horticulturists are characterized by technological levels of production as traditional (70%), in transition (11%) and modern (19%). There was the definition of economic classes (A, B, C, D, E) based on the analysis of the agricultural income obtained with horticulture, which referred to the following distribution percentage by income range: Class E (63%), D (24%), C (11%) and A/B with (2%). Multivariate analysis with the use of dendrograms identified four main groups: the grouping of traditional and diversified horticulturists (63%), horticulturists in technological and specialized transition (24%), modern and organic farmers (5%), and, finally, the group of modern and conventional (2%).
