Musikens betydelse för individens identitetsskapande och sociala liv : - en kvalitativ studie av sex musikstudenter

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to analyze the aspects which have formed music-students’ interest to perform music in various ways. Two of these aspects are family and school. Furthermore, -the study analyzes what music itself, and its performance mean in these students’ social and personal lives. A qualitative method was used and interviews were carried out with students who either study to become music producers or musicteachers. Sociological concepts such as habitus, identity and cultural capital have been used in the analysis where focus lies on discovering how playing music in a band can function as a social activity, and how it can contribute to solidarity in society. A discussion concerning the factors which motivates the participants to continue practicing their own music is also included. Despite financial problems and difficulties in finding time to meet up within the band, these students still have strong beliefs and dreams about their band’s progress in the future. The importance of being their own producers is also discussed. This is very important for their independence as a band and it makes it easier for them to achieve their goals.
