Aim The aim with this study was to analyse how strategic decisions through schemas of play, in this case the Pick and Roll, effect the end result of a basketball game. Following questions were answered: • How often is the Pick and Roll used? The total sum per team and game? • What field goal percentage generates the Pick and Roll? • How often generates the Pick and Roll turnovers? • How often does the attacking team receive foul during Pick and Roll, and what is the team awarded from the foul situation? • How often is the Pick and Roll interrupted without any effect? Method To be able to answer the questions in our study we videoanalysed 2251 Pick and Roll-situations from the European Championships for Men in 2003 through video analysis. We used nine different categories to sort the 2251 Pick and Roll situations. Results The Pick and Roll is executed 62,53 times per game, or viewed as 0,43 Pick and Roll / possession. Points / possession during the games was 1,04 while points / Pick and Roll was 0,60. Our result also shows that 31,41 percent of the times the Pick and Roll is used it doesn’t generate any effect at all. Playing Pick and Roll also means that you receive less fouls during than other attacks, teams gets fouled 0,33 times / possession during the game and 0,11 times / Pick and Roll. Conclusions Our conclusion is that the Pick and Roll is heavily overvalued as schema of play. This study shows that playing Pick and Roll generates shots with somewhat lower field goal percentage, fewer fouls received and as many as close to every third doesn’t generate any effect at all. Our results show that a coach chooses a self-defeating strategy when they use the Pick and Roll. / Syfte och frågeställningar Syftet med den här studien var att undersöka hur styrd strategisk spelmetodik, Pick and Roll(PNR), påverkar slutresultatet i basketboll. Pick and Roll, nedan förkortat PNR, är då två eller flera anfallsspelare samarbetar för att skapa ett övertag mot försvarsspelarna. Följande frågeställningar besvarades: • Hur ofta spelas Pick and Roll? Antal och frekvens per lag och match? • Med vilken skottprocent tas avslut från Pick and Roll? • Hur ofta leder Pick and Roll till turnover? • Hur ofta blir anfallande lag foulat i Pick and Roll samt vad blir påföljden? • Hur ofta avbryts en Pick and Roll utan att den har gett någon effekt? Metod För att få svar på frågeställningarna har totalt 2251 Pick and Roll-situationer från Eurobasket 2003 videoanalyserats. Vi valde nio bedömningskriterier då vi tycker att dessa innefattar alla intressanta händelser som sker i PNR. Resultat Pick and Roll spelas i snitt 62,53 ggr / match, även sett som 0,43 Pick and Roll / possession. Poäng / possession är 1,04 medan poäng / Pick and Roll är 0,60, detta är en stor skillnad. Vårt resultat visar att höga 31,41 % av försöken till Pick and Roll blir avbrutna utan att ge någon effekt. Att spela Pick and Roll genererar betydligt mindre dragna fouls än övrigt spel. Slutsats Vår slutsats är att PNR är en klart övervärderad spelmetodik som har negativ påverkan på matchens slutresultat. Denna studie påvisar att användning av PNR genererar; skott med marginellt lägre procent än övrigt halvplansspel, laget foulas sällan samt att det så ofta som närmare en tredjedel av försöken inte leder till någon effekt alls utöver att skottklockan närmar sig noll. Vårt resultat visar att coacher väljer en självdestruktiv strategi då de använder sig av PNR som spelmetodik.
