Studien undersöker hur tonårsserien 13 Reasons Why framställer sina karaktärer genom representationer av kön, sexuell läggning och etnicitet. Urvalet består av seriens fjärde säsong och elva karaktärer analyseras. Målet med studien är att bidra med kunskap om hur en populär tonårsserie stärker eller går emot rådande stereotyper kring kön, sexuell läggning och etnicitet. Det teoretiska ramverket består av feministisk teori, intersektionalitet, genusteori, representation, stereotyper och icke-stereotyper. Metoden är en semiotisk textanalys och för att analysera resultatet har denotation och konnotation använts med stöd från analysverktygen ikon, index och symbol. Genom att titta på variabler som scen, utseende, beteende, språk/tal, ljud och kroppsspråk har slutsatser om serien framställningar kunnat dras. Resultatet av studien visar på att serien 13 Reasons Why representerar kvinnor som starka och självständiga, men att kvinnor fortsatt är underrepresenterade i tv-serier. Männen framställs som både stereotypiskt manliga men även som icke-stereotypiska genom en framställning av mer känsliga män. Serien visar på en bred framställning av olika etniciteter med både stereotypiska och icke-stereotypiska framställningar. Framställningen av sexuell läggning visar på nya perspektiv och även om vissa stereotypiska representationer förekommer har serien öppnat nya vägar för representationen av bisexualitet och homosexualitet. / The study examines how the teen series 13 Reasons Why portrays its characters through representation of gender, sexual orientation and ethnicity. The selection consists of the series’ fourth season and eleven characters are analyzed. The aim of the study is to contribute with knowledge of how a popular teen series reinforces or goes against prevailing stereotypes about gender, sexual orientation and ethnicity. The theoretical framework consists of feminist theory, intersectionality, gender theory, representation, stereotypes and counter-stereotypes. The method is a semiotic text analysis and to analyze the result, denotation and connotation has been used with support from the analytical tools icon, index and symbol. By looking at variables such as scene, appearance, behavior, language/speech, sound and body language, conclusions about the series representations have been drawn. The results of the study show that the series 13 Reasons Why represent women as strong and independent, but that women are still underrepresented in tv-series. Men are portrayed as both stereotypically manly but also as counter-stereotypical through the portrayal of more sensitive men. The series shows a broad representation of different ethnicities with both stereotypical and counter-stereotypical representations. The presentation of sexual orientation shows new perspectives and although some stereotypical representations occur, the series has opened new avenues for representation of bisexuality and homosexuality.
