Nyanlända elevers erfarenhet och uppfattning om friluftsliv : En kvalitativ undersökning med nyanlända elever i högstadiet med ursprung från Somalia och Afghanistan / Newly arrived students´experiences and wiews on outdoor activities : A qualitative study with newly arrived students in secondary school from Somalia and Afghanistan

Abstract The aim with this thesis is to find out what experiences and views newly arrived students have on outdoor activities. Newly arrived students is a relatively new and increasing group of people in school today. There is hardly any research made on newly arrived students and even less on the topic outdoor activities. At the same time, we have a group of students, the newly arrived, who from a health- and integration perspective might benefit from outdoor activities. Newly arrived students’ background of flight and trauma might be moderated from the positive effects of outdoor activities. To take part of outdoor activities is, at the same time, a way to take part of Swedish culture and traditions and it might quicken an interaction and inclusion in school. In my study I have worked with two focus group interviews with one group of students from Somalia and one group of students from Afghanistan. The experiences of outdoor activities from their countries of origin differed between the two groups. Mainly, this was because of the difference of the landscape, climate and wildlife in the two countries. The experiences from school outdoor activities in their countries of origin versus school outdoor activities in Sweden differed in that way that it was non existing in their former home countries. In Sweden though, both groups had experiences of skating and forest walks. Student from both groups wanted to do outdoor activities, although fear of darkness, animals and freezing was mentioned in the interviews.   Keywords: outdoor activities, health, integration, newly arrived students
