Ungdomsfylleriet i Karlstad : En studie om hur Nykterhetsnämnden i Karlstad såg på ungdomskonsumtionen av alkohol som ett socialt problem under 1940-talet

This essay discusses how Karlstad's sobriety committee saw youth drunkenness as a socialproblem between the years 1941–1950. The aim is to analyze which behaviors the committeeconsidered to be problematic and the reasons for these, as well as how the board worked tochange and solve these problems. As a method, the research has used a discourse analysiswhere all the sobriety board's statements, from their annual reports between the years 1941–1950, have been carefully analyzed with a focus on problems, causes and measures taken. Theresults are analyzed in connection with previous research on the subject and a theoreticalstarting point in governmentality. The theory states that the state wants to control people butnot through a top-down perspective but instead through positive means and internalization. The result shows that the sobriety committee found the youth's behavior and alcohol habitsvery worrying and problematic and that the reasons behind this behavior were many butabove all were the popular and alcohol-filled entertainment venues and a lack of interest in asober lifestyle the most prominent causes. From a governmentality perspective, you can seehow the committee came up with several attempts at solutions to change the mentality ofyoung people around alcohol, but they repeatedly saw unsatisfactory results.
