Concept - detail - building Stockholm International Fairs, new main entrance I studied at the KTH School of Architecture from 1995 to 2000. After completing my studies I wanted to work in an office that had a structural way of thinking and that knew the building process; I therefore chose to work for Rosenberg Architects. I have worked on a number of projects, among them several for the Stockholm International Fairs, from the Rica Talk Hotel and Hall AE, to the new main entrance. In the projects we undertook at the School of Architecture we had to identify and draw details that were central to our concepts. I have here identified some key details that we considered to be essential for the concept in a built project; the new main entrance of the Stockholm International Fairs completed in 2013. The entrance has complex logistics with multiple intersecting flows: exhibitors, employees, journalists, VIPs and others. The main entrance is not a solitary object but woven into the structure and consisting of new and refurbished parts. Above the flows we placed a large "flying" roof, a wing, with a long cantilever. The details are described below; I have also evaluated their actual importance to the concept after completion of the construction. 1 To give the roof a light expression, we wanted a thin finish that must be experienced completely even when seen in perspective. During the project its diameter grew but still felt slender in the overall context. 2 We wanted to visually separate the ceiling and wall using a horizontal niche. This was not implemented and weakened the concept of the built outcome. 3 To reinforce the impression of a flying roof, we wanted the glass facade to meet the ceiling without a visible horizontal post; it was to be recessed in the ceiling. This could not be implemented but ultimately proved unimportant in relationship to the finished entity. Efter skolan ville jag arbeta på ett kontor som tänker strukturellt, som kan byggprocessen och sökte mig därför till Rosenbergs arkitekter. Jag har där arbetat med en rad projekt för stockholmsmässan, från Rica Talk Hotel och Hall AE, till huvudentrén i roller alltifrån medverkande till medansvarig. I projekten på arkitekturskolan ingick att identifiera och rita detaljer som var centrala för koncepten. Jag har här identifierat några centrala detaljer som vi ansett vara avgörande för att bibehålla konceptet i ett konkret byggprojekt, Stockholmsmässans nya huvudentré, färdigställd 2013. Entrén har en komplicerad logistik med flera korsande flöden: utställare, anställda, journalister, VIP-gäster m fl. Huvudentrén är ingen solitär utan invävd i mässtrukturen bestående av nya och ombyggda delar. Ovan flödena placeras ett stort, “svävande” tak, en vinge, med lång utkragning. Detaljerna beskrivs nedan, jag utvärderar också kort erfarenheterna efter genomfört bygge. 1. För att ge taket ett lätt uttryck ville vi ha en tunn avslutning som måste upplevas helt jämn sedd i perspektiv. Under projekteringen växte dess diameter men upplevdes ändå smäcker i sammanhanget. 2. Vi ville visuellt separera tak och vägg med hjälp av ett skuggspår. Detta utfördes inte och försvagade konceptet i det byggda resultatet. 3. För att förstärka intrycket av svävande tak ville vi att glaspartierna skulle möta taket utan synlig horisontell post, att den skulle fällas in i undertaket. Detta kunde inte genomföras men visade sig inte vara viktigt sett i relation till helheten. Henrik Nilzén
