Betydelsen av den socioekonomiska bakgrunden för elevers framgång i skolan

This knowledge review looks into the significance of students´ socioeconomic backgrounds and their success in school. The term socioeconomic background is defined from Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of capital and sees if there is any correlation between economic, cultural and social capital and success in students´ academic career. We have mostly read research articles that have looked into Swedish students and their socioeconomic background and articles that cover other students around the world to see if there were any similar factors that contribute to students´ results based on their socioeconomic background. The results show that there is a difference in success in grades, motivation and overall academic aspirations based on students’ socioeconomic background. There is a difference between students with an immigrant background and non-immigrant background when it comes to grades in Sweden and other parts of the world. Students with a non-immigrant background tend to perform better than students with an immigrant background mostly because students with non-immigrant parents could get better help from their parents and they could be guided better.  However, the importance of parents with an educational background is the most vital factors for students success because they could get help from their parents unlike students with low socioeconomic background. The results also suggest that depending on where the students live and what school they attend play a significant role in their results. Some schools have better resources than others and it can be helpful for students with a low socioeconomic background so they could be compensated with resources they lack at home.
